My all-time favorite theatre in LA is the New Beverly Cinema . They're a revival house that runs double features! Check 'em out!
Here's some thoughts on some newly released flicks I've seen on the big screen as of late...
ACROSS THE UNIVERSE
Pretty pretty pretty... the kinda movie you have to see on the big screen because it's so visually stunning. I'm a sucker for cool choreography & I love movies that feature talented unknowns (with the exception of the gal playing Lucy being a pop culture celebrity; she's Marilyn Manson's current girlfriend.) Good stuff... great vocals by the actors themselves & awesome cameos (I about leapt out of my seat when I saw Joe Cocker!) I must say that the actors playing Jude & Max are the hottest boys in film to have come along in ages. (Yum.)
INTO THE WILD
A few people have tried to get me to see this & I had zero interest & then my friend Juan finally dragged me to the theatre. (I've heard from everyone that it's depressing & I have certainly not been in the mood for something like that lately.) I owe my friends an apology. This movie is beautiful. And no, I didn't find it depressing at all... call me crazy but I found it strangely uplifting. Truly. Don't get me wrong, there are definitely sad moments throughout... but I didn't shed a tear... instead I just felt extremely restless to get the hell outta LA & travel again. There is so much beauty out there just waiting to be discovered.
2 DAYS IN PARIS
Written & directed by Julie Delpy... & she did a great job. Adam Goldberg is a hoot. This is one of those movies that makes you question whether any relationship is even worth the drama. The moral that I got out of it is: don't lie about your past. Even if you think you're protecting your partner. It all comes out in the end anyway. And if someone isn't cool with your past (which is what lead you up to the place you are now & the person you have become) then they are definitely not the one for you. You need to accept the whole person, not just the idea of them. A thought-provoking film.
THE BRAVE ONE
I've been dying to see this because I just love Jodie Foster... but it was Terrence Howard who blew me away. What an amazing actor that guy is. Damn. I've been hearing mixed reviews from my friends about this flick... but I absolutely loved it. I find it real interesting what people are capable of doing when they just snap.
STARDUST
This flick was way better than the previews made it out to be. I loved it! (Granted I drank an entire bottle of wine beforehand but nevermind that!) This is the most fun character I've seen DeNiro play since Brazil. (You should go see this for his performance alone.) It was very clever & very pretty & kinda reminded me of The Princess Bride (which is one of my all time favorites.) I haven't read the book yet... but it is definitely on my list now.
SUPERBAD
Funny but kinda long & after awhile I just wanted to punch the Seth character in the face. (Yeah, I know the character is based on Seth Rogen. I met Seth recently, he's a really nice guy & he laughs like Captain Caveman... but I still wanted to punch that kid in the face.) A lot of my favorite character actors made cameos which was pretty rad... & I think that kid who played McLovin is gonna be the Anthony Michael Hall of the aughts.
DEATH SENTENCE
I love Kevin Bacon. Who doesn't? (I have a Bacon count of 2 by the way... & if you don't know what I'm talking about you need to visit www.oracleofbacon.org) He was great in this, all the actors were, but I found myself being bothered by little things in the storyline. Can't go into details (I'm not gonna wreck the movie for those who haven't seen it) but I definitely think it was flawed. Very sad, but flawed. Brace yourself for some gnarly violence too. It's bizarre to me how mainstream that sort of thing has become.
BLACK SHEEP
An indie out of New Zealand that my friend Helton told me about. A gory little flick about man-eating sheep! Absolutely original & totally ridiculous... & yet so wrong. It was just awesome. I laughed my head off. "Baaaaaa..."
Not a fan of it but I am a sucker for this one show...
