About Me

The Bring Your Own Bag campaign is an online petition for a carrier bag tax in the UK. We would like the government to introduce a duty on all single-use plastic carrier bags (including biodegradable ones) on similar lines to the current scheme in Ireland. We believe that the tax would go a long way towards reducing unnecessary consumption and wastage of plastic bags within the United Kingdom. Our suggestion would be a levy of 10p per bag, similar to the amount charged in Ireland. The petition will be presented to the Prime Minister The Irish Model Introduced in March 2002 the PlasTax scheme has been an extraordinary success with consumption down by a staggering 95%. Prior to the introduction of the levy annual carrier bag usage in Ireland stood at 1.2 billion. Although initally viewed with scepticism by retailers and the general public alike the PlasTax has come to be seen as a hugely positive step with the funds raised through the tax re-invested in waste recycling and litter initiatives. Around Europe Supermarkets in other European countries such as Italy, Sweden, the Netherlands, France, Spain and Germany generally charge customers for carrier bags rather than give them away freely. In Italy the bags are usually larger than standard size and are, as such, much stronger. The Scottish Parliament has debated a similar tax but has not, as yet, gone ahead with the scheme. If it works in Ireland it can work in the UK! PLASTIC PLANET: THE CURSE OF THE CARRIER BAG
