Pedro Carneiro

About Me

"Acclaimed by international press as one of the world's leading solo classical percussionists, Pedro Carneiro’s exceptionally wide repertoire ranges from Bach to Stockhausen, performing regularly throughout Europe, USA, Far East, Australia and New Zealand. Now at the age of 31, Carneiro has performed the world premiere of over 80 works by leading composers worldwide (such as Psathas, Tuur, Tanaka, Yi) and collaborates regularly with a wide range of acclaimed musicians: Christian Lindberg, Arditti Quartet or Artur Pizarro.
Despite appearing regularly as a soloist/director, conducting from the marimba keyboard, Carneiro is the chief conductor and artistic director of the Portuguese Chamber Orchestra, a new ensemble which will perform its first concert in Lisbon on the 13th September 2007. The orchestra will become resident at the Centro Cultural de Belem, as well as being associated with national radio and television.
His upcoming plans include the release of his next disc on his solo series at Zig-Zag Territoires, recorded in Paris, featuring his own Bach transcriptions and works by living composers; a recording of the quintets he commissioned with the Arditti Quartet, recorded in the UK and Portugal; a 12 concert tour as part of the Celebrity Season of Chamber Music New Zealand; recording Psathas' vibraphone concerto psyzygysm for Rattle Records; recording Brad Bodine's new marimba concerto with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra; recording Michael Mantler’s concerto for ECM Records in Berlin, as well as solo recitals in Europe (Milan, Madrid, Bilbao, London) and Asia (Tokyo, Osaka).
Upcoming new concerti premieres include Peter Lieberson's new percussion concerto, receiving its World Premiere with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the European Premiere with the Gulbenkian Orchestra; Christian Lindberg's new percussion concerto, which will be premiered with the Helsinki Philharmonic; João Pedro Oliveira's new concerto with the Orquesta de la Comunidad de Madrid.
Carneiro is a also frequent guest soloist with numerous orchestras worldwide: BBC National Orchestra of Wales, London Mozart Players, Orquestra Sinfonica do Estado de Sao Paulo, Nordic Chamber Orchestra or the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra. International festivals and venue appearances include the BBC Proms and Queen Elisabeth Hall in London, Grant Park Music Festival in Chicago, La Biennale di Venezia, Schumannfest in Dusseldorf and IRCAM in Paris.
Pedro Carneiro's recent releases in 2006/2007 include “View from Olympus”, the double concerto by John Psathas with Michael Houstoun (piano), Marc Taddai (conductor) and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (on Rattle records) and “Ardor” by Erkki-Sven Tuur, with the Estonian National Symphony under Olari Elts (on ECM records)."
