About Me


Ann Cleare (b. 1983) is originally from county Offaly in Ireland. In 2005, she graduated with a Bmus from University College Cork where she was awarded the Mary V. Harte Memorial Prize for graduating top of the class. In 2008, she received an MPhil in Composition from UCC, where she studied with John Godfrey and Jesse Ronneau and also worked as a tutor for two years.
Her music has been performed in various venues around Europe, New Zealand and America by ensembles and performers such as Ensemble SurPlus, 175 East, The New York Miniaturist Ensemble, EAR Ensemble. Awards include: College Scholar Title (UCC 2006), The IMRO/Feis Ceoil Composition Competition (2007), The West Cork Chamber Music Festival Composer Awards (2008), Bank of Ireland Millennium Scholar (2009), as well as various grants and bursaries from The Arts Council Ireland and The Arts Office of Offaly County Council. She received a stipend from Akademie Schloss Solitude Stuttgart to attend The International Summer Course for Composers 2007, where she worked with Chaya Czernowin, Steven Kauzo Takasugi, and Ole Ludwig Holm. In 2008, she was selected by The Reading Panel to take part in the Cursus for Composition and Music Technologies at IRCAM from 2008-2009. Ann worked as a resident composer with The Cork International Choral Festival from 2005 to 2008.
In September 2009 she will commence a PhD in composition at Harvard under the supervision of Chaya Czernowin.
Recent and future projects include: ‘I am not a clockmaker either’ for accordion and electronics for the Ircam Cursus; ‘The Apophenia Transmissions’ for Wind Quintet, premiered 2008, revised 2009; ‘New work’ for prepared cello and prepared piano for Cliodna Shanahan and Aoife Nic Athlaoich; A Double Piece including a ‘New work’ for contrabass clarinet and electronics for Carol McGonnell and a ‘New work’ for contrabass clarinet, ensemble and electronics for Carol McGonnell and The Argento Ensemble; 'Dysmorphia II' (in a series of duos for various string combinations) for viola and double bass for Cyprien Busolini and Charlotte Testu.
