About Me

ARTISTIC BACKGROUND:
Violoncello player (acoustic and electric) and composer
ULRICH MITZLAFF completed his studies of violoncello in the 70ties, in Tübingen, with the professor Stefan Zarnescú. After his studies he was playing with the “Studentenphilharmonie” of the University of Tübingen. Since 1996 he is living at Lisbon, Portugal, where he is working as a composer and cello player of contemporary, experimental and improvised music, free jazz and sound-art.

PROJECTS – Participations:

“Separados Frutos”
– an experimental music and spoken word formation - with Nuno Rebelo - musical direction - , Vera Mantero and Manuel Guimarães .
“Fruit Music Quartet”
together with Franziska Schroeder , Pedro Carneiro and Pedro Rebelo [ 2 ][ 3 ].
“ZNGR - electro acoustic ensemble”
of Carlos Zingaro – musical direction -
Duo of electro-acoustic improvisation
with the electronic musician Vitor Joaquim .
Duo of improvisation and contemporaneous conception music
with the double bass player Miguel Leiria Pereira .
“open speech TRIO”
with the flute player of improvisation and free jazz and musical director Carlos Bechegas and the drummer Rui Faustino.
“Collage Métrique”
Trio of electro–acoustic improvisation and concept compositions with Carlos Santos and Manuel Guimarães .
“The Invisibility of the Small Perceptions”
- a choreography - created by Romulus Neagu - integrating an handicapped performer, José António Correia, and Ana Isabel Gomes from a social integration program. A documentary film about the piece was made by Miguel Clara Vasconcelos. Co-production: Teatro Nacional S. João e Teatro Viriato, executive production: Companhia Paulo Ribeiro in collaboration with: Associação Portuguêsa de Paralisia Cerebral (APPC) and núcleo de Viseu e Internato Viseense da Santa Teresinha. COLLABORATIONS:
Ulrich Mitzlaff was interpreting the original music composed by Nuno Rebelo in 2001 for “como rebolar alegremente sobre um vazio interior”, choreography by Vera Mantero for the Ballet Gulbenkian, and in 2003 for “Silicone Não”, choreography by Paulo Ribeiro for the Companhia Paulo Ribeiro. He participated in the “compact-disconcert” by Nuno Rebelo and in the multi-dimensional piece “…como um relâmpago…” by Américo Rodrigues. In 2004 he was invited by the Portuguese choreographer Rui Horta to participate at the artistic residency COLINA 2004 at the “Centro Coreográfico” in Montemor-o-Novo (Portugal).Beside various projects of improvised and experimental music he recently has been collaborating with the dancers Jane Mason, Marta Cerqueira, Hillell Kogan, Luís Guerra, Paula Pinto, Vitor Garcia, Manuel Silva, Ana Santos, Constança Couto, António Cabrita, Helena Lourenço, Isabel Souto and others.


LIVE in CONCERT:
Ulrich Mitzlaff was playing in various concerts with:Nuno Rebelo, Vera Mantero, Carlos Zingaro, Fried Dähn (Ex-Ensemble Modern, Ex-Frank Zappa Band), Américo Rodrigues, Rodrigo Amado, Carlos Bechegas, Carlos Santos, Manuel Guimarães, José Ernesto Rodrigues, Franziska Schröder, Pedro Carneiro, Pedro Rebelo, Vitor Joaquim, Francisco Rebelo; Pedro Tudela, Miguel Carvalhais, Miguel Leiria Pereira, Thomas Maos, Stefano de Bonis, Bart Maris, Marco Franco, Pedro Gonçalves, Bertrand Gauguet, Stefano Zorzanello, Josep-Maria Balanyà, Gregg Moore, Liba Villavecchia, Paulo Curado, Emídio Buchinho, Mark Whitecage, Phill Niblock, José Tavares, Alfredo Costa Monteiro, Jürgen Grözinger, Joachim Glasstetter and others. He worked in the duo I/O with Carlos Santos (MAX/MSP) in the field of the electro-acoustic improvisation and he has collaborated with the formations VITRIOL of Carlos Santos and Paulo Raposo and LIP (Lisbon Improvisation Players) of Rodrigo Amado.
