About Me

The Campaign Against Canned Hunting was founded by Chris Mercer and Beverley Pervan. After years of campaigning using their own savings, they established a not-for-profit Section 21 company (NO.2006/036885/08), which is dedicated to getting all trophy hunting banned in South Africa.
Canned hunting is a repulsive process which involves the captive breeding of wildlife, typically in appalling conditions, solely for the purpose of hunting it within a fenced compound from which there is no escape; there are many documented eye witness accounts of such appalling situations as lions drugged and shot within tiny holding cages, rhinos killed with multiple pistol rounds over the course of an entire day and the use of weapons such as crossbows, arrows, spears, knives and packs of hunting dogs to kill a variety of big game slowly and painfully.
The practice spawned in South Africa and has been exposed widely in the past by British and American journalists, however a beaurocratic smokescreen erupts with every exposure and the practice expanded, now occuring in other African and Asian nations and even in the developed world of the USA and Canada, today, even organisations such as WWF and the IUCN have begun to support trophy and canned hunting as a way of raising income, without stopping to ask how the money paid to hutning camps will ever find it's way into conservation programs.
Based in South Africa, we focus on addressing the problem here, but we also speak on, advise and support the issues raised everywhere we can; Chris regularly travels all over the world giving talks to the public, wildlife parks and organisations and delivering expert opinion directly to leaders of nations.
We believe that African wildlife is South Africa's greatest national asset. The protection of our future cannot be left unchecked to an often self-serving, morally depraved conservation bureaucracy. Nor can the exploitation of our national heritage be permitted to continue with such shocking cruelty that ordinary decent people in the first world recoil in horror, and respond by boycotting South Africa's goods and services.
The stakes are high: the hunting fraternity and its "nature conservation" accomplices are, in effect, seeking to hold the nation to ransom. Compassionate South Africans are invited to stand together to fight this dreadful conspiracy, and bring the cruelty to an end.
As in Kenya, all trophy hunting must be banned. The export of wildife bodyparts (trophies) must be prohibited. This fragmented, incompetent nature conservation regime must be dismantled and replaced by a more competent, streamlined service which is dedicated to protecting, not exploiting, our wildlife heritage.
