I am a b-girl...love hip hop. Reggae is another favorite, along with afro beat and real soul music and traditional jazz. I love songs of protest, love songs, and most anything positive and progressive, although I do have to have a side of my boys UGk, SUC and Devin the Dude when I need that street fix! I'm also a new fan of New Orleans Bounce.
Black Films...All of Spike's stuff especially, I can watch Do the Right Thing, Malcom X and Bamboozled all day.
Okay...I love detective shows although I'm not a fan of police. Law and Order, First 48.
Chinua Achebe, Zora Neale Hurston, Assata and Afeni Shakur's autobiographies were dope. Fela Kuti autobiographies, Funmilayo Kuti (Fela's Mom) wrote a great book called "For Women and the Nation" that talks about feminism and nationalism in Nigeria, a book called "Post Tramatic Slavery Disorder" - which was a great read. "Nile Valley Contributions to Civilization" by Tony Browder. I read a lot.
All of those who fought and continue to fight against injustice and oppression! Many of the people that I listed above.
