Introduction
Who Am I?
My names Joshua Wayne Smith known as Santana Blues,
I was born & raised in a small country town of
Huntington, Indiana.
How'd you get your
start in music?
My grandfather Frank Scarbrough was a professional
Trumpet player, he owned and operated Scarbrough
Music a musical repair shop in Huntington, In; my home
town. I most defiantly was heavily influenced by being
around music at such a young age. Although he passed 1997,
and I only have vaig memory's of him, I remember
enough to of been influenced by him. I treasure a cassette
tape of one of his live performances that I converted to mp3
on my computer, that is a living monument to what I've
became, seeing how music has been such a big
part of my family. After my grandfather passed my
uncle Jim Scarbrough also a professional
guitarist took over the repair shop.
I was influenced by more then just the musical background
in my family but even more by the artistic side. When I was
in elementary school I would go one day a
week with my mother to a local ceramic shop
and paint ceramic sculptors, my mom & I used
to also have an art week maybe every other week
with my Aunt Sue Lewis and draw/ Paint pictures
of the scenery around her lakeside community in
Columbia City, In. My mother also used to set up craft
booths at local craft shows and I'd always help her set up
& tare down, and work with her on new craft ideas.
My mother also is very into music, she alone has
over 1,000 CDs, I was raised listening to the Beatles,
Carlos Santana, Enya, Yanni, Kenny G, The Bee Gees,
Al Green, Barry White and so on. I defiantly have a
abstract thought on music, and art because of my
development of creativity, always thinking outside the
box as a young child. There wasn't hardly a moment
when there wasn't music being played in our home.
I was influenced by my father also, even though I'm
resentful to him for not being around to be a good father.
He is truck driver for Trailer Transit Inc which is a
trucking company that specializes in Musical/ Theatrical
shows. He's moved trailers for the likes of the Beatles,
Rolling Stones, Oprah Winfrey Show, Cats, pretty much
every Disney on Ice show, Phantom of the Opra, Barnum &
Baily Circus, Super Bowl, PGA Golf Tour, ESPN and
countless others. He's documented his travels through
pictures, and I've been blessed to travel with him in
his truck all around the country. Thus I've been around
a lot of elements that the average child doesn't get a
chance to be around, and I credit this to my creative
effort in becoming a Poet/ MC/ Graphic artist.
Do you have plans to
getting signed to a label?
At this time no, and I don't really see myself ever
wanting to, but I can't give a deffinet no; It would
haft to depend on what label it would be with and
how I'd benefit from it.
I'm a pretty self-contained artist from Advertisement/
Marketing/ Music/ Production/ Graphics/ Show
Promotion and so on. And I wish to adventually
sign a few musicians that I like and invest in there
creative efforts, and hopefully give them a good home
and atmosphere to continue to grow creatively under
my label EMP/ Soul Music, which stands for
"Empire" Soul Music, because I'm building an Empire
on being me, with no marketing gimmicks, and tricks.
Just a bit of truthfulness, I'm not looking to get rich
off of this, its more or less a hobby, but a very passionate
hobby so do not take that as a sign of weakness. I'm a man
who works during the day, and makes music at night, I'm just
an ordinary person doing something I love, and thats being
apart of a beautiful culture HIP HOP.
Anything Else?
Believe me there's plenty more where that came
from, I'm not done yet. My story is long, and
extensive, but I don't think its necessary to go into
100 proof detail. I will be adding to this in
the future, so be looking out for more info.
Peace,
-Santana
