*As a kindergarten student. Her first role was lead character: "Teacher", in a play called The Robots. Opening line: "Good morning class--today, we are going to have some visitors!"--enter robots stage left.
*Listening to Rosetta Hines spin jazz on 105.9, WJZZ, singing Sarah Vaughn's "What a Little Moonlight Can Do" into a perfume bottle.
*Putting a towel on her head and pretending to be Chaka Khan every chance she got.
*Joining every chior and participating in every program in Detroit's New LibertyMissionary Baptist Church, where she grew up listening to Laura Lee and Della Reese (if you don't know who they are--you SHOULD--google 'em!).
