About Me

DOWNLOAD "Al Qantarah" from iTunes!Ecstatic Rhythms of South Italy, Desert Voices and Metropolitan SoundsWith its original sound this project reveals a powerful stream of confluent energy between traditional musical cultures from opposite shores of the Mediterranean, blended together by thoughtful and sophisticated use of live electronics. Traditional vocal patterns and formulae are performed in a spirit of respect, so that original genres are always recognizable, even when electronic arrangement rises to a peak. The band uses diverse percussion – including frame drums, pots, cans and stray objects – jew’s harps, an array of wind instruments and the organetto or diatonic accordeon, along with voices and more voices. The astonishing and often moving effects created by juxtaposing and integrating the different musical sources, underlined by electronic resonance and carried forward by sheer rhythm, will immerse you irresistibly in a flowing density of sound. So... watch out or we’ll catch you... in other words: Ammaraciccappa!“Ammaraciccappa explores one of those transversal routes that I always loved to stroll. all the ingredients were there long since, the shaker just needed to be shaken… it’s done: the coktail is superb.”

Influences: Ammaraciccappa! is an Electro-World band from Salento (South Apulia) and Maghreb, a musical project based on the meeting between different rural traditions and electronic sound.Ammaraciccappa! is an idea of the percussionist and vocalist Upapadia: join the rapturous rhythms from south Italy such as Pizzica, Tammurriata and Tarantella with ritual Gnawa music from Algeria and Morocco and Rai music interpreted by Ahmed Benbali, one of the most interesting voices of the Algerian musical folklore. This idea evolved and became a project when Upapadia met another musician, Antonino Chiaramonte [aka emj_antonin]: together, they started a precise musical research focused on electronic music, discovering how this contemporary genre could be blended with popular songs and its instruments without losing their authenticity. The result is an original sound rooted in this intercultural meeting, an unexpected approach full of different voices and instruments such as percussions, wind instruments and diatonic accordion.Several musicians linked to their roots and, at the same time, opened to musical evolutions guaranteed most of all by the electronic possibilities… Impossible to resist to this sonorous magma!
