The Word Is Spoken!

Release the Inner Voice

About Me

A Show Series & Forum Dedicated to Poetry, Music, Performance, Free Expression, Publishing, & the Art of the Spoken Word

The show is weekly (see details below), every Friday, with more events in the planning stages. Will will have NO SHOW the week of Thanksgiving and the last 3 weeks of December.

Thanks to all who attended the 9/21 show. It was AWESOME! Thanks to first-time performer Matt Blasi for his outstanding set.
Okay, yes, it's true ... I shaved my mustache off while reciting love poems at the show. Anything wrong with that? -- David
The 10/5 show had a small turnout due to bad weather. The audience that was there was AMAZING! Thanks to Johnny Rocket, Prophet of What, and Polly for holding it all together!

Kayla will be painting live at the show on 10/12.
Also on 10/12 we may have a SPECIAL GUEST - a slam poet from Salt Lake City. No names yet ... not until this is confirmed. Please check this page and watch your bulletins for updates!

Poet Adrienne Nadeau from Tampa will be joining us in early November, the exact show TBA.

Musicians from Gainesville (FL) who will be featured at some upcoming shows include Lars Din, the Duppies, and Hamhock & Slide. Chelsea will hopefully join us again soon, and we hope to have Sissy (Sistana) return to our stage when she is back in town.

Shamrock McShane will not be joining us this month because he decided to star in the Mamet play "American Buffalo" instead. Tom Miller will be back in a couple of weeks (once he heals from his birthday party). Lacey will also be back occasionally. We can still count on Johnny Rocket, Josh Hoffman, and Sami J to be regular features for a while.

The Nude Bandit will be back soon ... please check back to this page for further updates.
OUR HISTORY Gainesville (FL) artist Kayla Prommersberger started it ... sort of. She introduced Gainesville poet and writer David Maas to Orlando novelist Joe Pasquale (who performs spoken word under the name The Nude Bandit). David organized a poetry and spoken word show at the Gainesville downtown library ... and The Word Is Spoken! was born. Joe was one of the featured guests and brought a California spoken word artist (Wavy Davy) to the first show. After a few shows at the library, David has moved the shows to a weekly Friday evening venue, Bar One in downtown Gainesville. (Thanks, Bar One, for your support!) TWIS! is also planning other future events, all-ages venues included.
There is never a cover charge to get in. Acoustic or experimental music is featured at some shows. Each show includes OPEN MIC, and poets, acoustic musicians, and performance artists of all stripes are encouraged to attend and share. Out-of-town guests are often featured too. LISTENERS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME! :-)
Our MySpace friends include readers, writers, listeners, and performers or poetry, acoustic/experimental music, and performance art. They also include publishers, promoters, producers, and performance venues. Our friends are invited to share information and are updated on current and upcoming shows. Also, friends from time to time receive a poem posted in the Comments on their home page.
If you have any questions about the show series or other special events, please contact David at [email protected] or [email protected].

My Interests

Organizing spoken word shows. Reading poetry. Listening to poets from everywhere spit at the microphone. Committing random acts of poetry. Pulling words apart into wonderful fun and putting them back together wonderfuller and funner. Not waiting for a capital letter in order to start. Not stopping just because there's a period at the end. Treating every verb as a comma, every parenthesis as a speech, every table of contents as a best friend. Once the world is united in words of wisdom and the wisdom of words ... then we can get started.

I'd like to meet:

YOU!

People who love to listen to poetry. People who love to spit poetry. All of humanity is welcome to attend our shows. WE WILL ALL HAVE A GREAT TIME!

Please do NOT post links or videos in the comments section! These will be deleted!!!! Also ... no questionable codes, etc. Please help to keep this page a fun and safe place to visit.

Books:

Take a wild guess....

Heroes:

You got it, baby
... YOU!
You are a poet, and you probably don't even know it. You have the gift. You have to kiss it, hug it, teach it to grow. Take it as far as you can, but don't stop there. Go beyond your limits. Peek over the edge. Tap that shoulder right in front of you - and you will be touching yourself.

We are now weekly at Bar One.

FREE to everyone 18+.

(Special exceptions will be made for word artists who are under 18.)

There is a different special each week on tap, and often DELICIOUS food! Please send a message for details or suggestions.
