About Me

"Shackamaxon" is a word in the Algonquin tongue meaning "Meeting Place of Great People". It was the Leni-Lenape tribe's name for the village of chiefs and elders that existed just north of present-day Center City Philadelphia before the coming of the English under Quaker leader William Penn. The name of the Village of Shackamaxon continued to remain in the local vernacular into the Twentieth Century, and one can still find vestiges of the presence of this settlement in the names of streets, islands, parks, and businesses in the areas known collectively today as Northern Liberties and Kensington. These were two of the Quakers' earliest settlements north of their city, and their budding metropolis soon overtook the Leni-Lenapes' tiny village along the banks of the Delaware.
