The Posters of Discontent
August 27 - October 9, 2008
Opening Reception - September 10, 2008 4-7 p.m. w/gallery talk at 5:00 p.m.
Timed to coincide with the run-up to the presidential election, this invitational exhibition features posters that speak out on current political and social issues. Participating designers come from both from the U.S. and abroad. Poster design has a history of activism. In addition to calling for social changes, the works in this show attempt to enact some. Most of the pieces were produced using hand rendered printing techniques, but posters printed using offset lithography will also be included. Copies of posters will be available for purchase with proceeds going to a charity of each designer’s choice.

EMU as Muse: A work by the Telegraph Collective
October 14 - November 25, 2008
Opening Tuesday, October 14, 2008 4 p.m. - 7 p.m.
Gallery Talk with artists: 5:00 p.m.
Comprised of seven members with diverse disciplinary backgrounds, TELEGRAPH is an artist collective that originated in Detroit, Michigan. The name Telegraph describes both the group's long-distance method of collaboration (the members are now scattered across the country), and pays homage to Telegraph Road, the ubiquitous Detroit thoroughfare. The collective functions as a running conversation, typically conducted at long range. Occasionally the group materializes and collects in one location to collaborate on projects and exhibitions. Telegraph made its exhibition debut at the Art Chicago Stray Show in May 2004, and has since exhibited in Toronto,Kansas City, and Detroit. The artists of Telegraph continue to exhibit individually at galleries and museums both nationally and abroad.
EMU as Muse
Telegraph members will enthusiastically descend upon Eastern Michigan University (EMU) where they will spend three days creating site-specific work engaging built and open spaces, as well as the detritus, the people and the resources of EMU and vicinity. The artists will not bring finished works to Ypsilanti, instead they will arrive with notes, sketches, pieces, parts and their curiosity. EMU becomes the object of Telegraph's artistic inquiry. All this will happen in the 72 hours before the opening and may continue throughout the opening reception and until the artists depart for their homes in Birmingham, Boston, Chicago, Fort Collins, Las Vegas and Los Angeles.
The intention is to define an exhibition not as a collection of prefabricated products which can be shipped and adapted to virtually any place, but rather as a body of work that is immediate, growing and organically connected to its place of origin. This approach to art-making emphasizes process, response and participation over product as its raison d'être. After the exhibition's run, work will not be shipped to the artists; instead the objects, wall paintings, drawings and other interventions will be recycled or painted over, becoming permanently integrated into the campus' collective memory. The exhibition will blend and reflect the various approaches, skills and sensibilities of the artists involved in order to develop an exhibition that is sustainable in nature. Get ready for some kick ass sculpture, craft, design, architecture, performance, video, drawings, and kitchen sinks!

(un)Civil Defense
A Two-Person Exhibition featuring works by Claire Rau and Zachary Orcutt
September 8 - October 17, 2008
Opening Reception September 8, 2008, 4 p.m. - 6 p.m.
Exhibiting the work of Zachary Orcutt (Zorcutt) and Claire Rau, (un)Civil Defense examines the human penchant for resolving issues with violence, a topic of great relevance in this, the sixth year of the war in Iraq.
Orcutt’s mocking sculptures of futuristic, personal military devices reveal both the American obsession with individualism and the fear-mongering endemic to contemporary American society. While Orcutt takes a boys-with-toys approach to warfare, Claire Rau looks at the long history of violence from a feminist viewpoint. Ancient weapons and wars are interpreted through the medium of textiles, traditionally the domain of women. Scenes of biblical violence are depicted in the style of delicate medieval manuscripts. Rau’s larger installations allude to Vietnam, terrorism and the genocide of Native Americans.
