About Me

I started playing guitar at 10. At 16 I began to work on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. After high school I attended Southeastern Louisiana University former alma mata of jazz piano legend Bill Evans. My band Ashbrook paid my way through college and I ended up with a degree in classical guitar. After graduating I moved in with jazz guitarists Steve Masakowski and Emily Rehmler. In that house we ate, slept and breathed guitar 24 hours a day 7 days a week. I worked as the house guitarist at the Saenger theatre in New Orleans and worked at Sea Saint Studios for Allan Tousaint and Wardell Quezergue through out the 1980s. I was envolved in local jazz scene with my own band Electrolife featuring John Vidacavich and Steve Masakowski and the R n B scene with Luther Kent and Trick Bag. I toured with rock acts like the Momma's and Poppa's and played with the New Orleans Symphony and Bo Diddley and many points between. In the 90's I began to work as a staff writer and musician for software company Rocket Network where I had the opportunity to record with Thomas Dolby, Cold Cut, Herbie Hancock, Sinade Occonor to name a few. We did the first on line collaborations ever done and ended up recording a live version of Bob Morley's Me Belly Full on the british television show Beyond 2000. This was also an internet first. Lately I've worked for the New York Jazz Foundation finding jobs for New Orleans Musicians who were hurt by hurricane Katrina. In the last year I created a studio project for my old friend Wardell Quezergue and we've now done 2 cd's of matereal also funded by the New York Jazz Foundation and Agnis Varis our patron saint of hurricane survivors. Herman Ernest the great New Orleans drummer and my good friend and I have started a publishing company called ErneGri Productions and are working in my Pro Tools studio creating music for the new decade. This is a quick overview of some of my “career” Time flies when you are having fun. Jay Griggs---------I'd like to thank my friends at DR strings for comping me enough strings to keep all my guitars and basses fresh for the next few months. This is the first time I've changed string brands in a very long time and they are great!!-------

Sounds Like: ====my friends and me==============ABOUT SONGS POSTED"Flexible" and "Nico" are songs that were written on the fly while demoing software for Rocket Network. These songs were performed more or less live with Engin and Bongo my good friends from London. After the demo, Engin and Bongo took the tracks and pulled them together in a CD of matereal we called Flexible. This was done in 1999. I believe it was the first or at least one of the first 2 or three cd's ever done this way over the internet.Peace was played by Steve Masakowski for his cd "For Joe" which I had the good fortune of being Co Producer on. If you like jazz guitar trio, you'll enjoy this one. I love this cd.Doc's Delight is by Wardell Quezergue who is a great arranger/composer from New Orleans. This cut features Dr. John on piano. Wardell had his hands in just about every R n B hit that came out of New Orleans in the 50's and 60's. He is a legend in his own time. I was able to use around 50 of New Orleans finest musicians on this project. It's a work in progress and one I'm happy to be contracting, playing on, and co producing it. Thanks again to the New York Jazz Foundation and Agnis Varis for the funding.I hope you enjoy some of this music.
