The Birth of a Queer Nation Determined to build a better world for future generations, the founding fathers and mothers of the Gay & Lesbian Kingdom set sail on the 14th of June 2004 in the Gayflower until they were washed ashore on Australias uninhabited Coral Islands Territory. With the strains of Gloria Gaynor filling the tropical air, they hoisted the rainbow flag on Camp Hill, Cato Island, the highest point in the Territory and above the beautiful coral lagoon and white, sandy beaches. The Gay and Lesbian Kingdom of the Coral Sea Islands was born.Located sixteen hours by boat, and 55 minutes by plane from Australia and the Queensland coast, just east of the Great Barrier Reef, The Coral Sea Island Territory is a cluster of deserted sandbanks and tropical Coral Islands which span 780,000 square killometres - thats roughly the size of Sweden and Norway put together. The gay group have declared the sandy dots the worlds first independent, sovereign, gay state in protest at Australia's homophobic stance towards same sex marriage and gay rights. However, despite being the worlds smallest Kingdom and only gay nation, the kingdom is definitely lacking in trendy nightspots, fashionable boutiques or, well, anything. It has no roads, no harbour, and no airport with new gay & lesbian arrivals needing to land on Cato Islands Coral Lagoon in a sea plane. In fact, the only building is an automated weather station. What it does have, however, is sandy beaches, coral reefs, a great tropical climate and a fantastic 3000 acre coral lagoon. The Gay Government is taking Australia to the International Court of Justice to have the Kingdoms Independence recognized on the grounds that since the Coral Sea Islands are an external territory of Australia rather than an area within Australias national boundary, international law dictates that anybody residing there is entitled to have representation. Under United Nation and International law of which Australia is a signatory it states an oppressed people who live in a overseas territory of a foreign colonial government shall have the right to self determination. In common with all sovereign nations, the Gay and Lesbian Kingdom of the Coral Sea Islands has a flag, the rainbow flag, and a national anthem, disco classic I Am What I Am by Gloria Gaynor.
