Los Califas

música antigua de alta california

About Me

Los Califas is a trio based out of Sonoma County that preserves the secular music of early California when it was a part of Spain, and later Mexico. While most of this music has been long forgotten, recordings of it exist on wax cylinders taken in the early 20th century by, Charles Fletcher Lummis. These recordings have been lovingly transcribed by Vykki Mende Gray of the San Diego Friends of Old-Time Music and are performed by her San Diego-based band, Los Californios . Los Califas is dedicated to bringing this music back to audiences in Northern California. The music ranges in various styles of popular dance; waltzes, polkas, minuets and even tangos, which can be found in this lost music. Early California music is of Spanish, Mexican, Russian and Native American influence. Feel free to contact us at, [email protected] Celebrate California's lost heritage with Los Califas!
