Alex Roth

Portrait by Kate Wilson

About Me

I play guitar and write music mostly dealing with structuring the integration of composed and improvised material. My main vehicle for this is Elastic Axis, a quintet I lead which toured the UK and Hungary in July 2007 and will hopefully be working on an album in the next year.
I also play in and write for Trio Roth and the new music ensemble Skita.
I graduated from Dartington College of Arts, where I studied composition under Frank Denyer, workshopping my music with members of Icebreaker and the Crash Ensemble, and attending masterclasses by Fred Frith, Eddie Prevost and Lou Gare, Horatiu Radulescu and Gavin Bryars.
In July/August 2007 I attended the summer intensive at New York's Centre for Improvisational Music, studying privately with Brad Shepik, Tim Berne, Vijay Iyer and Ben Street and in masterclasses with Steve Coleman, Ravi Coltrane, Samir Chatterjee, Tony Malaby, Jim Black and others.
["Movement" was written for the Rise Saxophone Quartet who gave the premiere at Bray Jazz Festival 2007.]
Enjoy the music!
