Enlighten. Encourage. Empower.

About Me

Some would say that an exclusive interview with the President of the United States, during one of the most controversial scandals to ever hit the White House, is the interview of a lifetime. Others would say interviewing Fidel Castro in the wake of unprecedented U.S. sanctions relief, or the conversation with Pope John Paul II was the most significant.
Time selected Smiley as one of Americas 50 most promising young leaders. Newsweek profiled him as one of the 20 people changing how Americans get their news and dubbed him one of the nations captains of the airwaves.
With his late night television talk show, Tavis Smiley on PBS, and his radio show The Tavis Smiley Show from NPR, Smiley was the first American ever to simultaneously host signature talk shows on both PBS and National Public Radio. Smileys television show continues now in its second season, and The Tavis Smiley Show on public radio is distributed by Public Radio International, PRI.
Smiley, who started his career as an aide to the late Los Angeles mayor Tom Bradley, also offers political commentary twice weekly on the Tom Joyner Morning Show. In addition, he has authored eight books and has his own imprint (Smiley Books) with Hay House.
Texas Southern University recently honored Smiley with the opening of The Tavis Smiley School of Communications and The Tavis Smiley Center for Professional Media Studies, making Smiley the youngest African American to ever have a professional school and center named after him on a college or university campus. Smiley cemented his commitment to TSU with a $1million gift to the Center.
The mission of his nonprofit organizationTavis Smiley Foundationis to enlighten, encourage and empower Black youth. Tavis Smiley Presents, a subsidiary of The Smiley Group, Inc., brings ideas and people together through symposiums, seminars, forums and town hall meetings.
Smiley has received numerous honorary doctorate degrees including one from his alma mater, Indiana University.
One of ten children, Smiley is single and lives in Los Angeles. In his spare time, he enjoys a good game of Scrabble with friends.

If you’ve visited my page before, I’m sure that you notice it has undergone some major construction. I’ve only been a “myspacer” for a couple of months now, but already I appreciate the way it’s connecting me to socially conscious people around the world. Being in touch with people keeps you humble, and it keeps you connected. With this realization, I’ve had my staff come up with ideas and ways to make my page more interactive and user friendly, so that I can truly connect with everybody. For a few years, my Blacks in Technology Tour focused on making technology, cross-country communication, and technological information available to everyone, and I think that myspace has provided that forum, especially in connecting with the younger generation. I have received so many uplifting and inspiring messages from my myspace friends, and it means a lot to know that I am making an impact in some way, shape, or form. That’s the goal; to enlighten, encourage and empower!

To sum that up, I’ve jumped on the myspace bandwagon…so I must offer you a little bit about me. I’m 42 now…time flies, but the older I get, the wiser and more accomplished I become, so no complaints here. I am a hard worker and I have so many projects going on that sometimes I tend to get lost in them; in work period. When the time comes, I do want to settle down, but I am trying to do my small part to change the world, and I need a little more time! I travel almost every weekend, giving speeches, participating in forums, doing work with my foundation for young people, and I throw in a vacation every now and then. I work out daily with my personal trainer, and try to eat healthy. I love to run...great stress reliever! I play Scrabble a lot. I love music (from Jill Scott to Talib Kweli to John Coltrane), and I enjoy live performances. I am passionate about learning, about expanding my outlook on life, and about spreading my knowledge around to as many folks as possible. That about sums me up and as much as I talk, I wish I had more to say, but I don’t. Enjoy the page. Please stay current on my shows/upcoming projects and get involved.

Keep the Faith!

-T
