Claudia Acuña Becomes Newest Member Of Marsalis Music Family
We welcome vocalist Claudia Acuña, the latest artist to join the Marsalis Music roster. Acuña is a native of Santiago, Chile who became captivated by jazz as a teenager. Since moving to New York in 1995, she has gained recognition as one of the most technically astounding and emotionally compelling new voices in the music, with three solo albums to her credit plus appearances in support of bassist Avishai Cohen, George Benson, Tom Harrell, and labelmate Joey Calderazzo. It was during the recording of Calderazzo’s Amanecer, where her voice and lyrics are featured on three tracks, that producer Branford Marsalis was impressed by her musicianship and feeling and became determined to record her for the label.Acuña’s brilliance and strong communicative skills were demonstrated in two performances at Boston’s BeanTown Jazz Festival this past weekend. After she reprised her duet with Calderazzo on the song "Amanecer" at the Symphony Hall concert that established a Berklee College scholarship in the name of the late Joyce Wein, George Wein was moved to proclaim that "the future of jazz singing is in very good hands." The following afternoon at the festival’s outdoor Global Stage, Acuña and her band had the large crowd dancing, clapping, singing along and cheering her powerful set.In early September, Acuña brought her longstanding band, which includes pianist/musical director Jason Lindner, guitarist Juancho Herrera, bassist Omer Avital and drummer Clarence Penn into the studio, with Branford producing. The resulting music will be released in 2008. Read more about Claudia...

MARSALIS MUSIC is the creation of Branford Marsalis, one of the most celebrated jazz musicians of the past quarter century. Based upon his extensive experience as a saxophonist, composer and bandleader, Marsalis recognized the need to form a label that allows a diverse array of musicians to document their best efforts. Launched in 2002, Marsalis Music has focused primarily on jazz, with a roster featuring such promising new artists as Doug Wamble and Miguel Zenón as well as Marsalis himself and such established stylists as Joey Calderazzo and Harry Connick, Jr. The label receives marketing and distribution support through its partnership with Rounder Records, and also sponsors Marsalis Jams through its non-profit arm, Music Education Initiatives, Inc. Marsalis Jams has presented ensembles in performance/jam session settings on college and high school campuses around the country, featuring such leading musicians as David Sánchez and the late James Williams.
