About Me

Here's a question I get often: "Are you in a band?" Hi, I'm Lucius, and I'm the band. Bad For Business is my band. I'm the only person in the band (for now). I sing and write songs, play 6- and 12-string guitar, 5-string banjo, mandolin, fiddle, piano and keyboard, ukelele, harmonica and reed flute, bongo and Tibetan cymbal. I can probably figure out how to make music from any instrument you put in front of me, although the wind and brass instruments are difficult because I smoke way too much. Maybe I'll quit smoking one of these days for the sake of my singing voice, maybe not. Who knows? I also am doing my own recording and mixing with the computer and my 4-track mixer and 2 microphones, and when I have enough spare time and inspiration I compose bits of techno music (mostly drum 'n bass w/synth). I know the recordings I have of my songs here are of an unprofessional level of production, but my microphones don't seem to record my voice right. A friend told me that since I'm recording digitally I need a pre-amp to make the coil inside the microphone more sensitive. I haven't been able to afford one of those lately. Also, all the songs except for 'Thyme to Evolve Part 2' and 'Waiting Here For You' I recorded in one or two takes (one or two takes each as well for each of the extra instruments tracks) this last Halloween when I decided that I would stay at home and get drunk. It is the first time since I was very young and trick-or-treating that I haven't gone out to parties on that night. I did go to the Greenbelt and play guitar for a little while in the dark and then went home with a six pack of beer to focus on practicing the recording of my songs. I admit I still haven't worked out all the solos that should be there. Hopefully I'll be inspired to practice recording some more some time. One day I will have a sweet studio with better gear and I will pump out massive copious quantities of exquisite ear candy for your most sensitive tastes. Until then, this is what you get unless you hear me live, which as we all know is a completely different experience. Are you experienced?

Sounds Like: All my influences popped into a blender and regurgitated for my own and your amusement? Maybe folky bluesy rock with some jazzy funk? Maybe traditional type stuff? American, Scottish, Comanche? Hell, I suppose it sounds like different things at different times. Some friends have said that I have my own style, but I think it mostly falls into the Folk Rock/Roots Music/Bluegrass categories. I have been trying to learn some traditional Irish and Scottish guitar and fiddle, but I haven't yet succeeded in combining Scottish music and Comanche music into my sound. Still need to research Comanche music if there is any.
