Blaze Foley was shot and killed in 1989 while helping an elderly friend, in Austin, TX. He left a legacy of great songs, some of which have been recorded by such artists as; Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett, John Prine, and Townes VanZandt. Joe Nichols is the most recent artist to cover a Blaze Foley song. He does a beautiful job with Lee Ann Womack singing harmony on "If I Could Only Fly". The album is titled "Real Things", check it out. Blaze has gained recognition as a legend for the last 17 years, and has been written about in magazines such as Texas Music, Texas Monthly, Maverick, Texas Co-op, and soon coming in the No Depression alternative country music magazine. There is also a Blaze Foley documentary that is scheduled to be completed this year, being produced by Abraxas Productions in Austin, TX.
Blaze's catalog consists of about 60 songs. I am Blaze's biological sister and also the publisher for his catalog, dba Texas Ghost Writers Music. There is a new Blaze recording released by Lost Art Records called Cold Cold World. His friends in Austin have recorded most of his songs as part of a Blaze Foley Tribute from Deep South Productions . And his lifestory will be available in Living in the Woods in a Tree, a memoir by the very talented Sybil Rosen, who lived with Blaze in a treehouse in Georgia when he first began writing his heartfelt songs. There are other recordings in the works, including early, intimate recordings of just Blaze and his guitar.
Blaze is not here with us to perform live, but I'll do my best to see that his songs and his story are more widely known to the music world. He was prevented from releasing his own songs, so I try to stay busy at promoting them, in every way I can. That's what Texas Ghost Writers Music is all about.
