Dead Pyrates Society

A Pyrate Tale

About Me

Nearly forty years after they first met, Joe Kennedy and Jimmie Randall renewed a friendship that had started when they were both in local Dallas bands in high school. At a reunion of veteran Dallas musicians, they began to talk casually about the possibility of playing music together. Another three years would pass before Joe invited Jimmie over to his house to play a little and listen to a few new songs he had written. The conversation soon turned to old times, old friends and departed members of their circle. They had been part of an amazing wrinkle in time that produced the beginnings of modern original Texas rock music in the mid 1960s. “We half-jokingly talked of the inherent dangers of being a rock musician and how it had proved fatal to some of our dearest friends.” Among them were the former Fabulous Thunderbirds' bassist , Keith Ferguson , Werewolves lead guitarist ,Seab Meador and Werewolves and “Tribe” bassist Bucky Ballard . Joe and Jimmie had played with Seab and Bucky in various combinations throughout the late sixties, seventies and eighties. Keith was a dear mutual friend to all of these players….. They are the quintessential “Dead Pyrates”. Joe said ”If these guys had lived two hundred years ago they would have been Pirates, not musicians.”They soon were looking for kindred spirits who fit a narrow profile and met minimum standards. To be considered, potential members had to meet the following requirements:1. Be at least 50 years old.2. Have used up at least 8 of their allotted 9 lives and put the other one in some serious jeopardy.3. Be not DEAD as of the date of acceptance into the band.4. Love to play and have fun doing it.5 . A rule to be determined later.6. Have to… “Get It”7. Some other stuff to be made up on the spot!
