Concerto Copenhagen

Scandinavia's Leading Period Instrument Ensemble

About Me

Fifteen years ago, few would have believed that it would ever be possible in Denmark to attract full houses and tumultuous enthusiasm for a programme consisting of a fairly unknown Bach cantata, two arias from Handel's opera Giulio Cesare, forgotten until a few years ago, and instrumental music by distant composers such as George Muffat, J. A. Scheibe and Arcangelo Corelli. But CoCo does just that and turns it into a celebration. There are those who claim that the future of classical music largely - and paradoxically - depends on small ensembles specializing in Early Music, and CoCo presents a strong argument in favour of this theory. Influences: You only need to drift a few blocks down Bredgade in Copenhagen before you come upon Garnisons Kirke (the Garrison Church), one of the capital city's hottest Early Music venues - concert hall and playground of the Baroque band, Concerto Copenhagen. In just a decade, a handful of musicians have transformed Denmark from one of the least developed countries for Baroque music to one of Northern Europe's most advanced. Audiences flock to the church and its orchestra. Partly because the quality as a rule is top notch, partly because of the excellent programming. In CoCo's company you experience the extraordinary.
