Get Your Own! | View SlideshowLeft school and Spent 5 1/2 yrs in various countries as I joined the Army (Royal Engineers). Great stuff! Boxing,Rugby,Parachuting,Running and plenty of social drinking. lol. I'm currently living back in Hemel and working as a Principal Engineer in the Telecoms business for the last 16yrs.We Love Travelling,Sunny Holidays especially Barbados and I play a bit of Golf time to time. Was down to 17 h'cap but don't play too often now. Married to Samantha and recently had a lovely baby Girl in the Summer who we named Cerys Jayne. Loved Soul music from the time of growing up in the late 70's/80's from the short revival MOD era and progressing through school onto the current then Soul music.Saving the cash to buy clothes and Going out and buying records from places like Bluebird records in Luton/Edgware.! Listening to hero's at the time on radio and pirate radio such as Dr Bob Jones (myspace.com/drbob06)and Robbie Vincent (if it moves Funk It! lol).I then joined the Army and fairly quite on the Soul scene but did go to my first Caister and Prestatyn in early/mid 80's. Used to see Dave Blow,John Atkins(RIP) and Eddie on the Station suited and booted waiting for the train to go to Dingwalls and the like on Sunday afternoon and I was envious as had my kitbag on shoulder and had to travel back to camp.! (Dave now a gr8 buddy) Also visted events up North but vague memories now!!! I left the Army and met my wife at a 'Beano' in Blackpool (Samantha's from Swansea) so spent many years up and down the M4 until we Married in 1997. I got back into the Soul Music scene since stumbling across a internet site called SOULBOYS run by a lovely lady called Niki (http://www.soulboys.co.uk/soulroom.htm) and then going to a doo in London called Chocolate Soul (run by the Sourmash Collective and Terry Jones).Got me well and truly hooked again (as I was bit in the wilderness for a few years though the late 90's.) Visited a regular local Soul doo in Barnet called SOUL at the Sebright run by John the'Jester' Willis (myspace.com/jestergoove)and he introduced me to have a dabble at DJing and from there I got the bug. lol. I spoke to my local Pub landlord one night and said the music was a bit cr*ap here and he replied 'You think you can do better?'. So I took the bull by the horns and said 'Well yep ,let's give it a try' and thus started a local Soul doo which was named Treacle Soul.(Treacle being part of local slang for Treacle Bumstead aka Hemel Hempstead lol). This became a regular monthly Soul night at the Litten Tree (White House) Leverstock Green for nearly 3 years until recently. Also been DJing at Soul Events the last four years at various venues as purely a hobby and passion (as I'm no pro). Played at the Original 2nd Soul Village Radio for the first time and Soulville back at original camp.(Thanks Richard R.for the break). I mostly play Rare,Modern, Crossover,Boogie,New Independant Soul but also enjoy Soulful House,Southern Soul & new 'Modern' Soul. Anything Soulful really. I DJ'd at the Soulville Weekender in Yarmouth this year and opened up the back room. I've met some really special friends throught the soul scene and I would not change a minute!Live life to the full I say and Enjoy! Gotta add Monumental too as the same vibe but more emphasis on dancing as a Saturday gig and bigger venue.(Tips from D'Arcy on Dancing lol). Also been supporting (and a few warm up sessions) at Soul Purpose nr Hinckley.Another great doo with a regular crowd and some great choones being played and newies released. Favorite Weekender for my kinda Music is Soul Essence(Gavin Page and Bob Cosby's doo) which has been running 4 many a year and I already missed too many so it's Catch up time. Remember Thorne ?(been only once) , well this is right up your strassse!.Gav asked me to play a set next year which I'm REALLY looking 4ward to. The Soulville W/Ender is up and coming and one to watch out for taking off in the future .Another really friendly Vibe with a wide scope of music to cover every music eventuality....Another weekender that got be hooked was TOGETHERNESS weekender with three rooms of music and live acts(William Bell and Bobby Patterson were superb lst year).Gotta say the TENT is where I spend most of my time where pure connoissure/xover music played.Kinda like S/Essence in the cold.!! Then into the Modern room which is just great.!! Played at Chisoul recently which is another great venue and excellent people who go.Lovee it.Thanks to the loveable 'Rogues in Brogues' Paul T and Jamie. ----------------------------------------------- A group of us (Wayne Arbon,Andy Jones,Neil Forbes and myself) are running another Soul Doo called Filthy Soul at @Filthy McNasties,68 Amwell St,London. All things Modern,Crossover and the real soul deal basically.Excellent feedback so far and it's run on 2nd friday of the month in the back room and a great vibe we think. Been running since June and with a few appearances of super sub, Mick Whitehead who's a fantastic guy and taste in music alike.! Been invited back to play at Soul Essence next April by 'The Gouch' (top maan) to play in Back Room on Saturday. Just one weekend you can't miss if you're into 'Real Soul'. A great line of DJ's and collectors alike and can't wait to hear DJ's from 'The Soul Discovery Show' on Friday.Well enuff of that bumbling on...see ya Marcus x N.B. My Penguin tab came from being bitten on the leg (scarred)by one Shabby Pengu in the Army whilst patrolling in the Falkland's back in early 80's.. lol More to come when I have the time...............
