About Me

This is a fan site dedicated to the Temptations' newest lead singer, G.C. Cameron. R&B legend George Curtis "GC" Cameron traces his musical roots to rural Mississipi, where he was born and raised. Gospel music permeated the countryside and most of Cameron's nine brothers and sisters were "fluent in music." After being wounded in action in Vietnam, he returned to his adopted home in Detroit, a hotbed of R&B music in the late sixties. Shortly afterward, he auditioned and was selected to fill an opening as a front man for the Motown band, The Spinners. Within three months, he and The Spinners opened for Marvin Gaye at the Apollo theater, and then toured the country. the group became an integral part of Motown's pop song factory along with the Temptations, the Four Tops, and the Supremes. The band's first breakout hit, "It's a Shame" was co-written by Cameron's friend, Stevie Wonder, and ranks among the greatest pop music tunes ever recorded. GC's soaring tenor --both raucous and silky smooth--powered "It's a Shame" to No. 4 on the Billboard charts, giving the Spinners their biggest Motown hit before the great harmonizers left the label for Atlantic Records in 1972. Still under contract and soon to marry Gwen Gordy, sister of company founder Berry Gordy Jr., GC moved to California from Detroit with most of the Gordy empire, and launched a solo career with the company's new Mowest label. With a five-octave range, Motown's best producer-writers including Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Normal Whitfield, Willie Hutch and Van McCoy were eager to work with the young crooner. He recorded everything they threw at him, making a song like the Temptations' "Runaway Child", his own, to a ditty called "Pajama Games" which perfectly tracked Smokey's falsetto. A number of his Motown singles chartered ("Act Like A Shotgun," "No Matter Where," "Let Me Down Easy,") but his biggest hit at that time was the haunting "It's So Hard to say Goodbye to Yesterday," on the soundtrack for the 1975 movie "Cooley High." The song proved enduring for generations of music fans. Boyz II Men remade it into a new hit in the 1980's. His extensive discography spans three decades and reflects the influences of his musical mentors, Sam Sooke and Curtis Mayfield. Cameron recently reunited with The Spinners where he is again "front man", and currently tours the country singing with the band. In 2001, Cameron released his latest solo CD, "Shadows" (DAGA-JACC), a project he describes as a "labor of love." when he is not touring, Cameron devotes much of his time to his DAGA-JACC Foundation, an organization he founded to raise awareness and funds to support education for youth. G.C. recently joined the legendary Temptations and is back on stage performing all around the country. The Temptations will be touring around the U.S. along with other legendary groups such as the Four Tops, O'Jays, and the Whispers.
