G.U.R.U. BOOKS CLUB

I am here for Friends and Networking

About Me

Gaining Understanding Reading Urban Books Club (G.U.R.U. Books Club) was founded February 19, 2006 and is located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. We currently have 6 active members. We choose one book at each meeting to read and meet approximately every 6 weeks, usually on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday to eat, be merry, and of course discuss the book. Though we usually meet at a members house and do a potluck, every other meeting we go out somewhere for the meeting. In the past, we've held meetings at Red Lobster, Pieces of Eight for what is now our Annual Fall Brunch Meeting, The Edelweiss Boat for a summer's day book club cruise, Barnes & Noble Bookstore, and at Potawatomi Bingo Casino for the Seafood Buffet where we did our Holiday Gift Exchange. We have hosted book signings for Edwardo Jackson, RM Johnson, and Kimberla Lawson Roby (though she didn't show up we had a good time with readers from the community who showed up).We are very diverse in our ages and our backgrounds, with our youngest member being 29 and our oldest is 55. The age differences contribute to our life experiences allowing all of us to relate differently to the books and interpret the meanings based on our experiences. We enjoy reading and keeping with the name of the book club, we tend to read urban books by African-American authors. For our 1st year anniversary, we will be discussing allowing new members join, both men and women, so if interested, please send an email through our page or at [email protected] - Deputy Sheriff// Licia - Teacher// Alaura - Teacher// Pat - Caterer// Toya - Student// Alicia - Human Resources//
