An economically disadvantaged teen works in a hospital to earn money for college. After his best friend ends up in critical condition at the hospital, he sets out to solve the mystery of what happened to him.

Clay is 17 and works in a hospital as an orderly. He comes from a poor family, and he wants to go to college and med school. His best friend is rich and is planning on going to Duke to one day become a doctor. Their bond is the love of cross country biking and the trip they have been planning all of their lives. A girl comes along and causes distrust and jealousy.
One evening Clay leaves work and goes to Joey’s house to make things right. He finds his friend hallucinating. A fight occurs and suddenly Joey is in the hospital comatose. Clay is blamed.
Now Clay must find out what happened to Joey. He has to save himself, but most of all he wants to save Joey, and the hours tick away as Joey’s condition worsens.
