Toxic Sound System, based in Falmouth, Cornwall, is the longest running Roots & Culture sound west of Bristol - UK, playing and promoting Reggae Music and the message of Rastafari in the region for well over fifteen years.
Working with singers from Jamaica and across Britain, their uncompromising and unorthodox style - a delivery reminiscent of 'yard' sounds, cut with the rhythms and vibes of the UK Roots scene - has gained them much respect. Over the years they have remained a consistent, popular and contemporary "voice in the wilderness" for conscious Roots Reggae.
A role call of the acts that the Toxic Sound Crew have played support to and alongside over the years, reads like a Who’s Who of International Roots Reggae stars: Lee Perry, Mad Professor, Sly & Robbie, Culture, The Abyssinians, Mykal Rose, The RasItes, Misty In Roots, Julian Marley, Delroy O’Gilvie, The Disciples, Conscious Sounds, Zion Train, Kitachi, the On-U Sound All Stars, Jah Works International, I'n'I Oneness & the UK Players, the Revolutionary Dub Warriors, Donette Forte, the Black Survivors . . . the names continue, but you get the picture. They’ve also been asked to warm up sessions for world and urban music artists including; Remmy Ongala, the Bhundu Boys, Soul II Soul and Credit To The Nation.
In 1996 the crew were approached by Jah Works Promotions to enter the UK Unification Dub Cup, they did - and reached the quarterfinal stages in their first sessions outside of Cornwall.
Since then, the TSS has hosted sessions in Cornwall featuring PAs from some of the UK’s finest Reggae vocalists and producers, including; Jonah Dan, Danny Vibes, Nishka, Shashamani Sound & Wayne McArthur, Dougie Wardrop & Culture Freeman, Iration Steppas, Blackout JA & The Jungle Red Band and many others.
Toxic have also been at the controls for community projects, charities, promoters, regional and internet radio, and festivals including; Surfers Against Sewage, A Girl Called Bob Promotions, LRF Music, Eclipse105FM, BBA Online, Megadog's Lizard Festival '97, the Beach Festival 1998, the Eclipse Festival ‘99 Reggae Wales 2004, ARumDo Summer Weekender 2006. . . and still the list grows.
Through forging and maintaining these links, Toxic Sound System has become a key player in assuring the appearances in Cornwall of some of the most influential Reggae acts around.
Year on year, the Sound continues to grow. Most recently they have been writing and producing rhythms from their own Studio with local singers, players and MCs. And live sessions now regularly feature the acclaimed UK Roots artist ‘Daddy’ Teacha (Alpha & Omega) on the mic.
