From the moment he purchased his first set of turntables at age 15, it was obvious that DJ Junior had a natural talent for the art. A year after purchasing his first set of belt drive turntables, Junior realised the equipment he had would limit his ability to advance forward in the world of Djing. After saving scrupulously, Junior purchased a brand new set of 1200 turntables and has never looked back.
Six months after purchasing his new turntables, Junior entered the 1996 W.A. DMC Competition “just for funâ€. At the time Junior did not realise how much of an impact this would have on his career. He was crowned the 1996 West Coast’s champion, at the age of 17, defeating veteran DJ’s such as S-Man, Cut-Nice, and David ‘3D’ Ward, and ultimately becoming the youngest WA DMC champion. Junior went on to the Australian finals, where he was placed fourth amongst the best the country has to offer. In 1997, Junior successfully defended his DMC State title, and became the first West Australian DJ to win back-to-back titles. The Australian finals that year saw Junior redeem his fourth place position, for the second consecutive year.
Junior is the current WA DMC Champion, and is the first and only West Australian DJ to have 3 state DMC titles under his belt. Adding to his numerous achievements, Junior recently became WA’s first and only Scribble Jam DJ Champion, a title held by only the very best. He was also one of the semi-finalists at the Australian Scribble Jam Nationals.
The past few years have seen Junior play an active role in Perth’s DJ scene, and participate in numerous Turtablist Competitions. In 2003, Junior became the first DJ to tour across Australia and New Zealand for the entire Autosalon Automotive Show series (www.Autosalon.org).
After years of DJing, Junior has decided to share his skills and knowledge with his DJ counterparts. Junior is the creator and instructor of the first Advance DJ Course in Western Australia. The five week course runs at Extended Play (www.ExtendedPlay.com.au), and focuses on technical development of scratching, beat juggling, advance mixing techniques and live remixing.
To attribute his success, Junior was head hunted by Stanton (‘makers of the finest DJ equipment’) three years ago to endorse their DJ equipment, and is to date Australia’s official endorsee for Stanton equipment and Final Scratch.
Junior’s preferred fortes are RnB and Hip-Hop. He combines the basic DJing skill of mixing two song together with the cleverness, expertise and dexterity of a Turntablist. Fusing together both worlds has made Junior one of Australia’s most unique Clubtablists, having the ability to rock a club crowd while mystifying them with his trick mixing abilities.
Junior’s DJing skills have seen him frequently travel interstate for gigs, and he has even performed for special occasions in Malaysia. Here in Perth, Junior has held down many residencies. These days you can catch DJ Junior as one of the four residents at one of the biggest clubs in the Southern Hemisphere, Metro City (www.MetroCity.com.au).
