They are kickin it down at The Vic Hotel on Hay St in Subiaco this time for an Old Skool Sunday Session which goes way, way back into time. WHAT IS NEW JACK SWING?
New Jack swing is a style of R&B mixed with elements of hip hop that was popular from the late '80s to the mid '90s. The sound is a blend of "sporadic" hip hop swing beats(a term given due to the high use of rhythmic improvisation) popular during the golden age of hip hop and combined with the R&B style of singing.
The term New Jack came from journalist and New Jack City co-writer Barry Michael Cooper to describe the sound produced by R&B and hip hop artists at the tme and super-producer Teddy Riley's unique style of intergrating rhythms and samples mixed with urban contemporary R&B. The term came from New Jack being a slang meaning someone or something that is new whilst the term Swing refers to the rhythmic pattern, in regards to Cooper, he ussed the term Swing to refer to his comparison between Swing Jazz frm the 1940s and the music Riley created in the late '80s.
The era spanned from late 1987 'til 1996 and was helped by film franchises for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Ghostbusters and House Party and TV shows, Fresh Prince Of Bel Air, A Different World and In Living Colour.
