I am here for Friends and Networking

About Me

My textbook on Fight Choreography for film and TV is currently in bookstores and online sellers. The book is titled FIGHT CHOREOGRAPHY- THE ART OF NON-VERBAL DIALOGUE.

"The deity is within you, not in ideas and books. Truth is lived, not taught." Herman Hesse
"Your sacred space is where you can find yourself again and again." Joseph Campbell
"If you love life, don't waste time. For life is what time is made up of."- Bruce Lee.
I have done many different things in my life, constantly looking for ways to express myself and hopefully leave somewhat of a positive mark and change in this world, while some close friends who know me well have called me a "Renegade Taoist." I am a firm believer in making the necessary sacrifices and commitments to following your bliss in life. So far in my life, I have been a karate instructor, graphic artist/designer, stand up comedian, videogame designer/producer, contributing editor for various magazines, film critic, stuntman, stunt coordinator, and fight choreographer. I have recently added the title Author to this list.
As a stunt coordinator, fight choreographer, and stuntman- I have worked with some incredible screen fighters, fight choreographers, and filmmakers like Jet Li, Yuen Cheung Yen, Brandy Yuen, and Tsui Hark. If you lived in the L.A. area, I was the stunt coordinator and writer of the L.A. Times commercial that featured Yuen Cheung Yen and his wire fu, narrated by Ben Afflek, which showed at almost every theater in town for a while. I also worked with professional wrestler Ultimo Dragon and recently wrapped on a film with David Carradine and Udo Keir.
Here's a short film I choreographed the fight scenes in called, "Enter The Grill Master."
I have written for Inside Kung Fu, Impact, World of Martial Arts, and Kung Fu/Wu-Shu magazines for over 7 years. Here are some of the cover stories I have written.
I wrote every article in this 25th aniversary issue commemorating the death of Bruce Lee. It was 4 months of hard work, but it was well worth it for me. Bruce was and still continues to be a big inspiration in my life. This was the least I could do to say thanks for being such an huge influence in my life.

My first interview for this magazine was with Jackie Chan. Talk about pressure and stepping up to the plate!

I have directed, researched, and conducted interview segments for DVD special features for Hong Kong Legends (a U.K. DVD label) and the Dragon Dynasty label for The Weinstein Group (TWG) as well as consulting for them.

As a professional stand up comedian for 13 years, with 4 national TV appearances, and performed at the world famous Comedy Store in Hollywood for most of that time (oh, the stories I can tell you!!).
As a video game producer and designer I have worked for THQ, SNK, Mattel, and Sony.
I was raised Buddhist but lean much more towards Taoism because of my martial arts training and not conformed to any one type of religious belief, nor do I judge anyone's belief's.
I like to do real simple things like go to swap meets, used bookstores, workout, and see lots of movies (of course) from different genres and countries. My current addiction is going to shop for DVDs at Amoeba Records and then to Chinatown, Monterey Park, Koreatown, Thai-town, and Japantown to hunt for what else...DVDS!!! It's my crack habit. But hey, I'm making a living at it to justify my habit. Not into drinking, drugs, partying, or the club scene at all.
Photography is a new hobby I discovered and am having a lot of fun with. Who knows...one of these days, I might have one of my photos on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Some of my photos are here on my pics page. Please take a look at them and give me your honest comments!
I'm also happy that after 30-something years, Washington DC FINALLY has a baseball team. Win or lose, it does not matter as long as we have a team to cheer or jeer. It's been way too long. With their new stadium, the Wasington Nationals can bring in more revenue and attract better and stronger players. So far, they are doing really well this season (3-0) with Ryan Zimmerman on 3rd. But I know it's a long season.
My philosophy on life is pretty simple. It's not about the money you make, the jobs you have, the college degrees or credentials we gather over the time of our lives, because we can't take any of that with us when we die. But it's the people we meet and take into our lives, whether it be a casual friendship or a serious relationship that can have a profound effect on our lives. Although I am no fool, hey, we need money to live and survive, but on a deeper level, it's those life experiences that we really take with us and make us who we are.

I used to travel all over the country and parts of the world to fight in the open tournaments as a point fighter. Here is a video of the legendary Keith Vitali, the #1 point fighter in the US from 1978-1981. At the age of 18, I saved up my money for a year and moved down to Atlanta to train with him for several months. We are still close friends and still keep in touch to this day.

My Interests

Movies, movies, movies! Either in the theater or on DVD. Usually, I like films that come out of Asia, but am open to other countries and genres. I'm not a movie snob at all because I still like to escape by seeing "mall movies"-you know, all the generic crap that the studios crank out (which seems like they are putting out more and more of it every year)that always have a happy ending. But I go in moderation because it's much like going to a fast food restaurant. It might taste good going down, but has no real nutritional value at all. I like going to see movies that stick with you long after you left the theater with a good story, character development, and justified action sequences. However, I am an action movie connoisseur. Finding an action movie that challenges your thinking or ideals, let alone get you enmeshed into the story and character in the US is somewhat of a rarity. I think the last one to do so was the first "Matrix." And look at how successful it was!

The theatrical poster for "A Bittersweet Life." One of my favorite Korean movies from 2005 along with "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance" Both of these movies are visually incredible and have a great story.

I like almost all sports. I like boxing, Mixed Martial Arts fights (UFC, Pride, etc.), pro wrestling, and Lucha Libre. Some of my favorite wrestlers are Ultimo Dragon, Rob Van Dam, Rey Mysterio Jr., Dean Malenko, Eddie Guererro, Bret Hart, and Tiger Mask. Some of my favorite professional fighters are Muhammad Ali, Kazushi Sakuraba, Randy Couture, Sugar Ray Leonard, Bill "Superfoot" Wallace, and Benny "The Jet" Urquidez. Although I am not a fanatic, I will try to watch baseball, football, and basketball games when they are good match ups or important games but have too much to do to watch it every night.
I also like to go to swap meets, people watching at 3rd Street in Santa Monica, working out, used bookstores, going to the Bodhi Tree bookstore, comic-book and movie conventions to collect movie memorabilia and hard to find DVDs, and going to Amoeba Records in Hollywood (a.k.a. the crackhouse).

Anything that motivates and inspires my creative spirit.

I'd like to meet:

Creative types, spiritual folks, martial artists, stunt actors, film geeks, artists of all types, and Ultraman (or his alter ego Hiyata). Amy Sedaris, Tina Fey, Bonnie Hunt. Aerosmith. Comedian friends from my past. People who I can have interesting stimulating conversations with. In general, people who have a dream, are following their bliss, passionate about living life, who are sucking the marrow out of life, and doing something with it.
BTW- Does anyone know how to get to Nebula M-78?

Music:

My music tastes vary depending on my mood at the time. Curently I've been on a real Green Day kick. I've been listening to their CD's "Dookie," "Warning," and "American Idiot" to get my blood going.

When I am writing I like to listen to classical or movie soundtrack music like...

Television:

I usually do not watch TV because I do not want to get addicted to a weekly habit. But when I am flipping channels I usually find myself stopping when I see an episode of MASH, SEX & THE CITY, and THE SIMPSONS. I also think Rowan Atkinson is a comedic genius on the TV series (not movie adaptation) MR. BEAN.

Good TV writing is much harder than writing a screenplay because of the time restraints and in creating and developing a flow for each show that is similar, yet different. BUT ON THE FLIP SIDE...I absolutely love JACKASS (TV series and movies)!! It appeals to the big kid in me/ bored stuntman on a set trying to keep myself occupied in-between takes without getting in too much trouble.
Any program that shows another artist's creative process. Other than that I feel a lot of what we see on TV are real life and energy drainers.
Since I was a stand up comedian for 13 years, someone asked me who are my favorite comedians are. Here's a list of SOME of the ones that have left a lasting impact on me. Some of these people, I have had the opportunity to have either seen them perform live, talked with, or at some time in my career have worked with them, and some I got to know an became close friends with. The list is in no particular order. No generic "You ever notice...?" comedians here, but true individualistic one of a kinds here. Some you know, some you don't, but they all have their own unique style and a personal point of view, while being very funny.
Bill Hicks (RIP), George Carlin, Steve Martin, Richard Pryor (RIP), Damon Wayans, George Lopez, Sam Kinison (RIP), Dennis Miller (pre CNN), Carl Labove, Chris Rock, Dennis Wolfberg (RIP), Joel Hodgson, Fred Asparagus (RIP), Gary Shandling, Eddy Izzard, Dave Atell, Mitch Hedberg (RIP), Doug Stanhope, and Dana Gould.
Sam Kinison- when he was firing on all cylinders!
Chris Rock on his HBO special
Eddie Izzard on Flags

Books:

Books on filmmakers, biographies, ancient history, philosophy, self-help, and spirituality. Some of the books I have read are The Power Of Now, The Alchemist, The Power of the Myth, Zen In The Martial Arts, and Women Who Run With The Wolves. Currently reading "The Master Key System" by Charles Haanel.
J. Krishnamurti, Joseph Campbell, Lao Tzu, Chuang Tzu, and Bruce Lee are some of my favorite philosophers on life. I do not read to "escape" but rather to empower myself and make myself a better person. So as a result, fiction is something I usually do not have time to read.
However, to contradict myself, I do like reading graphic novels. some of my favorites are Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns," "Ronin," and "Elektra: Assassin," Alan Moore's "The Watchmen," and "The Killing Joke," and Grant Morrison's "Arkham Asylum," to name a few.

Heroes:

As adults we become afraid of the unknown and are driven by fear. Where as with a child everything to them is the unknown, yet they have an incredible sense of wonder, which is what we lost as adults. My heroes are the ones who transcend their own fears and those placed upon us by society to live their own lives and reclaim their sense of wonderment to express themselves in whatever medium they chose to in their lives.

Some of my heroes are Bruce Lee, Richard Pryor, Muhammad Ali, Lance Armstrong, and Gordon Parks...essentially anyone who has the strength, courage, and tenacity to overcome any of life's obstacles that has set in front of them who are still able to follow their bliss no matter what the odds are. I also admire Bob Costas for his intelligence in TV journalism. Mark Cuban for his unbridled passion in whatever endeavor he decides to pursue. Also, 60's baseball slugger Frank Howard was my childhood idol and still is my hero. He played with passion even though the teams (namely the Washington Senators) he played for weren't winners.

I also admire great fight choreographers. The great ones show story and conflict within the characters and transcends language. Some of the ones I admire and respect are Yuen Woo Ping, Lau Kar Leung, Tang Chia, Sammo Hung, Ching Siu Tung, Jackie Chan, and Corey Yuen.

Here is one of my favorite fight scenes from the movie "Pedicab Driver, where Sammo Hung fights the legendary Lau Kar Leung.
