If God hasn't moved the mountain..start climbing!

About Me

Hi - I'm Shelley Asbury. I have been writing songs since I was a little gal- but didn't start pursuing the songwriting dream until around 2002. When I was in high school/college, my friends thought I would really do something with music, but the realities of growing into adulthood and raising a family put all that on hold. My love of music comes from my Grandpa. He encouraged me to start playing the fiddle when I was young. He took a genuine interest in my life and music. His people were from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, a small town on Lake Superior named "Au Train" ...a place were I still like to draw on memories for songs. When I started getting serious about songwriting, I also developed new friendships with musicians that encouraged me to pick up the fiddle again and give it a go. I started listening to songs by "Bill Monroe" and "The Stanley Brothers"...people I had never heard of! But Oh ....that sound! It was a familiar sound that reminded me of Grandpa's roots in Au Train...it was full of history and soul. I feel at home with Bluegrass music....it makes my voice feel at home. I continue to familiarize myself with the tradition, but realize I need to live in the songwriting world too. Music Row doesn't seem too interested in publishing bluegrass tunes, and it's hard to make a living off the royalties. So, in 2007, I purged my heart of some of these bluegrass tunes and released my first CD project. Traditional Bluegrass! It was just something I had to do to move on....I credit Pete Goble and Andy Ball for making that all work out for me. I have played with a few bands in Michigan, but my goal is to continue focusing on writing great songs. I am currently one of the Regional Workshop Coordinators for NSAI. (Nashville Songwriters Association In't). We have a nice group of writers here in Detroit--I would love to see someone in the group develop into a hit writer! I currently co-write with a few people, and look forward working with some pro-writers in Nashville. My ultimate goal would be to have a staff writing deal with a major Nashville publisher, and make a good living doing so! Although starting my career late in life, I feel a definite purpose and direction of where the music needs to go...." Whatever happens in my music career is God's will...if it doesn't go any further than it is today...I accept it. I am already blessed to have overcome certain situations in my life...being able to write and perform music is just an added bonus that continues to heal and strengthen my soul!" Shelley Asbury !
