..For Jaume Vilaseca Quartet, jazz is not a style, or a dogma. It is something absolutely alive, it is communication in its purest form, an open and devoted approach to music and improvisation.
In his previous work ('FotografÃes' 1999; 'Aquà i allà ' 2002 and 'World songs' 2004) Vilaseca's compositions invite us to discover some of the world's music that has been and will be owned by people, a truly global jam session. Now, JVQ faces an unusual repertoire. The music of progressive rock band Genesis, from 'Tresspass' 1970 to 'The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway' 1974, is an infinite source of ideas, creativity and risk. Stripped of its lyrics and the baroque touch of the time, it reappears in its essence with all its magic and contemporary flavour.
Genesis reborn with a new voice, a new language, and rhythms and colours based on Flamenco, African, Latin and Brazilian roots.
BIO:
Jaume Vilaseca studied piano and classical harmony at the Municipal
Conservatory of Barcelona and completed his training with several
courses and seminars at the Taller de Músics, also in Barcelona.
From a very early age he played piano and keyboards for Brazilians such
as Euclydes Mattos, Acelino de Paula, Danilo Pinheiro and Carlinhos
Pitera and in groups such as Free Ghetto Brasil, Saravah and the Anna
Luna Brasil Band. He also worked with the Argentine singer/songwriter Sergio Makaroff for some six years, accompanying him on tours throughout Spain and on studio recordings.
He has collaborated with many jazz artists and groups from Barcelona, such
as Randy Greer, Loti Lewis, Jay Wallis, the Aiguaviva Quartet,
Groove Fantasy and the Ãngela Suárez Quartet.
Jaume has composed musical scores for varous theatre productions, working together with Directors such as Paco Mir, Pep Pla, Pere Sagristà and Magüi Mira.
Jaume Vilaseca currently leads a jazz line-up, Jaume Vilaseca Quartet, comprised of some of the most outstanding figures of the Barcelona music scene: the saxophonist VÃctor de Diego, the bassist Dick Them and the drummer Ramón DÃaz. On some numbers of the band’s third album, the drummer and percussionist Roberto Faenzi enhances the sound of a group that has been together now for five years, since the release of Fotografies (Dindi Records, 1999), and is at the forefront of the rich and competitive world of Catalan jazz.
Aquà i allà (Discmedi, 2002) consolidated Vilaseca's line of composition, defining a music without frontiers, Latin and Mediterranean, sound spaces converted into authentic landscapes in which melodies and improvisations mix languages and enter into a dialogue with each other.
World Songs (Discmedi 2005) presents a collection of postcards of common
places, songs based on the collective memory that cease to be recognisable
when they are transformed into free, innovative discourses, pure creative
music. The strong personality of the compositions, the involvement of the musicians, the profundity and boldness that they show in their interpretation and in exploiting the possibilities of each instrument, will allow the rhythmic and melodic roots to combine and merge in a totally natural way.
Welcome to the Mediterranean, to North Africa and Andalusia, to the
Caribbean, to Brazil...
Jaume Vilaseca Quartet has toured around Spain, Latin America and Poland, participating in various international jazz festivals. The band has also performed in China - Beijin JAzz Festival - and Beirut, Lebanon.
