FRATELLI DI SOLEDAD
Il progetto Fratelli di Soledad (nome preso in prestito dal titolo del libro di George Jackson, attivista delle Black Panthers ucciso nel 1971) nasce nel 1989, dopo una breve parentesi con il nome di Soledad Brothers.
Fin dalle prime uscite i Fratelli mettono in chiaro le proprie intenzioni, fatte di ska e reggae contaminate da elementi combat rock, pop e da testi (firmati quasi sempre da Giorgio "Zorro" Silvestri) che trattano argomenti anche a sfondo sociale ma visti attraverso il filtro dell'ironia.
La fervida attività live, caratterizzata dalle capacità di Roberto "Bobo" Boggio, vero animale da palco, aumenta la cerchia dei loro estimatori e nel 1992 arriva il primo disco in studio, intitolato "Barzellette e massacri", che contiene pezzi che diventeranno dei veri e propri classici, come "Fratelli di Soledad", "Brescia Bologna Ustica" e "Radiomuffin".
L'album d'esordio viene seguito nel 1994 da "Gridalo forte".
I Fratelli a questo punto si lanciano in un'impresa ardua ma proficua registrando "Salviamo il salvabile", raccolta di cover più o meno famose tratte dal repertorio della musica d'autore (e non) italiana.
Nel 1996 pubblicano per la Virgin il loro quarto e ultimo album "Balli e pistole", prodotto da Max Casacci (Subsonica), che si rivela piuttosto diverso dal resto del precedente repertorio.
Dopo più di 500 concerti in tutta la penisola, un'apparizione a Valencia in Spagna e la partecipazione ai più importanti festivals rock italiani da Arezzo Wave, a Sonoria, al Pellerossa, nel 1998 il gruppo si scioglie, congedandosi con il proprio pubblico torinese in un indimenticabile ed emozionante concerto al Barrumba (noto locale torinese), strapieno per l'occasione.
Dopo quattro anni di silenzio il gruppo si è ricomposto e, quelle che avrebbero dovuto essere tre uniche uscite live estive previste in occasione del Festival Indipendent Explosion 2002, si sono presto trasformate in un tour di 60 date.
Alcuni di questi concerti sono stati registrati e nel giugno 2003 è uscito in tutti i negozi su etichetta Mescal un album dal vivo "Sulla strada 2002" contenente tre brani inediti e nuove versioni live di canzoni riferite ai precedenti lavori della band.
Da segnalare la partecipazione durante l'anno 2003 ad alcuni importanti festival quali: Tora Tora 2003, Arezzo Wave 2003, Independent Days 2003, Chicobum Festival 2003/2004, Traffic Torino Festival 2004.
A nove anni di distanza da Balli E Pistole, i Fratelli sono tornati in studio di registrazione per la realizzazione del nuovo cd , che conterrà tutti brani nuovi ed originali, dal titolo "Mai Dire Mai" uscito nel Marzo 2005 per il Manifesto Dischi.
Fratelli di Soledad (the band’s name is taken from the book by George Jackson, a Black Panthers activist killed in 1971) start out in 1989, after a short period of time when the band’s name was Soledad Brothers.
From the very first, Fratelli di Soledad make a point of their musical intents: a mix of ska and reggae blended with combat rock elements, pop music and lyrics (written for the most by Giorgio "Zorro" Silvestri) dealing with social uneasiness, seen through the filter of irony.
An ever-increasing number of fans attend the band’s powerful live performances, led by the singer Roberto "Bobo" Boggio, a true rock’n’roll animal, and in 1992 the first studio album is released: "Barzellette e massacri" (Jokes And Massacres). The album includes songs which were soon to become classics, such as "Fratelli di Soledad", "Brescia Bologna Ustica" and "Radiomuffin".
The band’s debut album is followed by "Gridalo forte" (Shout It Out Loud) in 1994. At this point of their career, Fratelli di Soledad go in for a hard but rewarding task with the recording of "Salviamo il salvabile" (Let’s Save What Can Be Saved), a new album including a collection of cover songs written by some of the best known Italian singers and songwriters.
"Balli e pistole" (Dances And Guns) is the band’s fourth album, released by the Virgin label in 1996; it is produced by Max Casacci (Subsonica) and is rather different from what they had ever recorded before.
After more than 500 live shows throughout Italy, an appearance in Valencia (Spain) and the participation to the most important Italian rock festivals (Arezzo Wave, Sonoria, Pellerossa, etc.) the band breaks up in 1998 with an unforgettable and moving farewell show at Barrumba (a well known venue in Torino), sold out for the event.
After four years of silence Fratelli di Soledad gather for a 3-date Summer reunion at Festival Independent Explosion 2002, but the three concerts soon develop into a 60-date tour. Some of the shows are recorded and in June 2003 "Sulla strada 2002" (On The Road 2002) is released by the Mescal label. Fratelli di Soledad’s first live album includes three previously unreleased songs and new arrangements of old classics.
Worth noting are Fratelli di Soledad guest appearances in 2003 at major music festivals in Italy, such as Tora Tora, Arezzo Wave, Independent Days and Chicobum Festival; their shows continue to be appreciated all through 2004 (Chicobum Festival and Traffic Torino Festival).
Nine years after their last studio album (Balli e pistole), Fratelli di Soledad are in a studio again for the recording of their new album "Mai dire mai" (Never Say Never) which is released in March 2005 for the Manifesto Dischi label.
In Summer and Fall 2006 the band is on tour again. The 2-hour long shows include the songs from the new album as well as old songs, revisited and rearranged.
