A Letter from Mother Earth

To all my friends, everywhere;

Whether you are from Dubai or Dublin, London or Lima, Melbourne to Morocco, New York or Nagasaki, Johannesburg or Jakarta, I have something to tell you which may affect the rest of your life, and that of your children.

See, here's the thing: My health is deteriorating, and I need your help. I've got this fever that I can't seem to shake. I mean, this one is not like the others. Sure, I've had my fair share of ups and downs: numerous ice ages (you guys might get a cold which lasts a few weeks, I get one which lasts a couple million years!), earthquakes and shifting tectonic plates(a chiropractor won't sooth those aches), asteroid impacts which wipe out whole species (where was Bruce Willis when I needed him?), and not to mention volcanic cataclysms which spewed thick ash across my surface. I could deal with all that, but this fever, this thing you call 'global warming' is like nothing I've ever had to contend with.

The fact is, I can't deal with this alone. I need your help, and I need it TODAY!

Your scientists say that my symptoms are clear: My oceans are warming. My ice-caps are melting. The colours of my coral reefs are fading. Forests are falling too fast for me to replenish. And as a result, species after species is dying and disappearing. The chirping of my birds is quickly being silenced because the homes I made for them are either changing too dramatically or being destroyed altogether. My rivers, which were once raging torrents and turning into trickling streams which sometimes never even get to the ocean.

Your scientists say conclusively that global warming is being caused by carbon emissions from human activity. Do you want to know what the saddest part is? It's that your scientists also know exactly how to stop global warming and halt it's destructive symptoms, yet my conditions still continue to deteriorate because not enough action is being taken. Yes, thats right, whether I recover from this or not depends on YOU. It depends on the thinking and actions of every single human being who lives on my surface and breathes my air.

Without your help, more destruction is inevitable. Without your help, more species will disappear. And without your help, my well-being, and therefore yours, depends on what action you are willing to take.

So I ask this of each and every one of you: I have supported you throughout the ages, but for me to continue providing the gift of nourishment and beauty with which you are surrounded, and for me to support your children, then I need your support. I need you to take action.

Thank you for taking the time to read my letter. I ask that you might take the next few minutes to consider this:

You need to decide what kind of world you want to live in because your well-being is dependent on my well-being.

Yours in servitude for as long as you'll permit,

Mother Earth

p.s. Like I said, I need as much help as I can get, so please tell all your friends about my page.

10 Things You Can Do To Help

Change a light

Replacing one regular light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb will save 150 pounds of carbon dioxide a year.

Drive less

Walk, bike, carpool or take mass transit more often. You’ll save one pound of carbon dioxide for every mile you don’t drive!

Recycle more

You can save 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide per year by recycling just half of your household waste.

Check your tyres

Keeping your tyres inflated properly can improve gas mileage by more than 3%. Every gallon or litre of gasoline saved keeps 20 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.

Use less hot water

It takes a lot of energy to heat water. Use less hot water by installing a low flow showerhead (350 pounds of CO2 saved per year) and washing your clothes in cold or warm water (500 pounds saved per year).

Avoid products with a lot of packaging

You can save 1,200 pounds of carbon dioxide if you cut down your garbage by 10%.

Adjust your thermostat

Move your thermostat just two degrees in winter and up 2 degrees in summer. You could save about 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide a year with this simple adjustment.

Plant a tree

A single tree will absorb one ton of carbon dioxide over its lifetime.

Turn off electrical devices

Simply turning off your television, DVD player, stereo, and computer when you’re not using them will save you thousands of pounds of carbon dioxide a year.
