About Me

Hello, Marty B. here! What I do: bassist, teacher , composer, songwriter, consultant, MD, some doubling on guitar and piano, music copyist, workshop director, music-book publisher and cat owner. (Owner?)
I've been doing music since I was a wee pup, earlier than that actually, and my relationship with music is pretty simple: I love it, play it, write it and teach it.
Though I’ve played a good share of original projects, I’ve mainly been a work-a-day kinda player. I’ve gigged in venues from Knott’s Berry Farm to Tokyo Stadium, and have played countless dinner houses, casuals, clubs and theatres, including long runs with many Hollywood musicals incorporating most styles of music I’ve ever heard of.
I’ve worked with Latin great, Willie Bobo, Motown queen Martha and the Vandellas, as well as a few performances with Ray Charles and two seasons with the Santa Monica Symphony. For many years I was the musical director/conductor for actress/singer Karen Black in her one-woman show, (Los Angeles, San Diego & San Francisco performances), and was the co-band leader of my “casual group” Raw Silk for ten years doing an assortment of private parties.
I’ve done sessions at/for Warner Bros., Capitol Records, CBS and NBC, including work on cartoons, albums, film scores and soaps All My Children and Desperate Housewives.
Having learned the art of music copying as a composition major in college, I’m also an experienced music copyist. I do a lot of work for local singer/songwriters and bandleaders as well as occasional “larger” job such as for Sheryl Crow, the Orlando Philharmonic and Duran Duran. and have spent over 400 hours tightening up bands and teaching professional group-playing skills and rehearsal techniques to musicians of all ages.
As a teacher and consultant, I have delivered more than twenty-five thousand hours of one-on-one instruction and career consultations with over 800 students. In addition to teaching beginning and intermediate students, some top acts that my professional students have performed or recorded with include Little Feat, Delaney and Bonnie, Robert Palmer, Carly Simon, Beck, Tori Amos, Macy Gray, Dixie Chicks, Seal and Linkin Park. I also specialize in teaching people how to proficiently play in group settings.
As a composer anything goes and I write in many styles. Some of my music is on this page while you can hear more at my Podcast Site . After being around the block a few times, I founded Sonata Publishing in 1994 which publishes educational materials that provide easy to understand, sane and applicable music-oriented information that steer an individual or group closer to their musical ideal scene. You should check it out.
I’m currently freelancing as a bassist, composing, teaching bass, guitar and piano. I've been writing some articles about music and music lessons that you can read at my Blogger Site.
Play on!
Marty

Band Members: I use various player friends for different projects, and much of what I do is straight off of Sibelius into Sonar or DP. I have some upcoming tracks that are going from Sibelius to Pro Tools or Logic.

Influences: Eric Dolphy, Cream, Verdine White, James Jamerson, Ray Brown, Claude Debussy, Mozart, Spyro Gyra, Yellow Jackets, Weather Report, Beethoven, Prokofiev, Cecil Taylor, Chicago Arts Ensemble, Chic Corea, Taj Mahal, John Mayall, Yes, Steely Dan, Original Chicago Transit Authority, Paco Sanchez, Ahmal Jamal, Freddie Hubbard, Miles Davis, Rolling stones, Al Jarreau, Beatles, Crusaders, Duke Ellington, Micronesian Gammalan, Bob Marley, Led Zeppelin, Bruce Springsteen, Brecker Brothers, Jobim, Thelonious Monk, East Indian Music, Stevie Wonder

(Intense classical on an electric bass is challenging and sight-reading Tower of Power charts makes me work a bit though...)

"Right Where I Want" !!!

My most recent tune, "Right Where I Want" just entered the 2nd phase of the ASCAP International Songwriting Contest. I know there are a number of original-music pros out there, but since I come from t...

The next commercial writing project I'm on is a Reggae / Calypso tune.

It's an upbeat boy meets girl kinda tune with a little bit of Salsa in the keyboard part. No cowbell, but it has a cool "la, la, la" sing along section. (Gotta get those people in the movie theaters s...

I just finished my newest commercial tune (STILL ROUGH...)

I wanted to write a rock tune that had the flavor of all the '70s & '80s hit rock tunes I've ever played at gigs that made people get up and party. So I present to you "I Finally Got You, Right Wh...
