"3 A.M. BLUES"
University Avenue, downtown Gainesville, Florida (1980).
In late 1970s and early 1980s, Johnny Hines was a well-dressed bluesman who played the streets for enough money for food and drink to survive. Muddy Waters mentioned the small North Florida town in the lyrics of "Deep Down in Florida" on his 1977 album HARD AGAIN (produced by guitarist Johnny Winter). Muddy also mentioned Gainesville resident Bo Diddley when he sang "I'm going down in Gainesville/To see an old friend of mine."

"WE WILL NEVER FORGET?"
A Memorial, 25 years later ...
It seems our president, George W. Bush, did. Forgive him ... he's a Christian, an alcoholic, and a drug addict.
These photographs were taken* in the winter of 1982, the first after the Vietnam Memorial's completion. At first, architect Maya Lin's design was criticized for being "dark" and sinking into the earth, compared to the Washington, Lincoln and other monuments that were white, and rose to the heavens. But in this, the first snow of the year, it was the polished, black granite wall that stood out of the cold, while the glorious past disappeared into the overcast sky.

DOUG WIMBISH (BASS GUITAR!) ...
Watching this five-minute clip, you'll understand why in one week, back in 1992, Mick Jager, Bruce Springsteen, and Seal all asked Doug to join their bands. Having joined Living Colour less than a year earlier, Doug turned them all down. This performance from Orlando, Florida (House of Blues, December 28, 2001) is a dramatic example of how Doug influenced Living Colour, after stepping in to replace the departing Muzz Skillings. Not to dismiss the excellent play of Muzz, but Doug is much more of a “lead†bassist, and he and drummer Will Calhoun developed a tight musical relationship, and quickly became a significant, creative force in the band. When Living Colour disbanded later in 1992, Will and Doug collaborated throughout the band's 8-year hiatus. They worked together on a number of projects, including on Herb Alpert's 1996 release "Colors," their own "Jungle Funk" with vocalist Vinx, and their still-active HeadFake project (see page on friends list). Soon after this Living Colour show, near the end of the band’s “reunion†tour, the band began work on its 2003 release “Colidoscope,†which was expectedly laced with Doug and Will’s dub sound. Living Colour has remained active ever since, and is expected to write and record another record in 2008.

"STORMY WEATHER" ... Rockledge, Florida (August 30, 1979)
Two days after inflicting horrific damage on the Caribbean's Windward and Leeward Islands, a weakened Hurricane David grazed Florida's East Coast. It then rode the Gulfstream north, regaining momentum, and delivered one, last devestating blow, this time in South Carolina.

"THE FLIGHT OF DISCOVERY" ... Cocoa, Florida (September 29, 1988)
THIS SHUTTLE LAUNCH, the first after the Challenger exploded in 1986, was viewed from the (Cape Canaveral) mainland, on the bank of the Intracoastal Waterway (Indian River). The rusty building was what remained of an infamous restaurant called Hubb's Inn, said to have been frequented by famous mobsters in the 1920s who would motor or sail their yachts up the Intracoastal from their winter estates in Miami Beach.
FOR SPACE COAST NATIVES, the routine of standing in the front yard watching a rocket streak across the sky was normally followed by walking back into the house to watch the televised replay of the launch, and to listen to the flight's progress as reported by mission control.

MIAMI BEACH ...
There are the occassional storm swells that come up out of the Caribbean and break near the southern tip of Miami Beach, but the area is more known for its abundance of Deco-Style architecture and "beautiful" people.

REEF ROAD, PALM BEACH ... (3 to 4 feet)
The oppulent town of Palm Beach is one of the narrow barrier islands that run along Florida's east coast. Driving north on a mansion-lined A1A, near the north end of the island, one comes to Reef Road, another of the small residential roads that cross the neighborhood from the intracoastal to the ocean. Here, south of the inlet between Palm Beach and Singer Island is one of Florida's best winter breaks ... crystal clear, turquoise, glassy swells that break on an old coral reef just off shore. There have been frequent 10-foot winter days on Reef Road, usually after the passing of particularly strong cold fronts.

BILL HICKS was a favorite comedian, and friend of many rock n roll musicians, including members of Metalica, Rage Against the Machine, Nirvana, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Tool. In fact, Tool vocalist and front man Maynard James Keenan eulogized the late comedian on the band's 1996 AEnima album, sampling pieces of Bill's act, and featuring him as a cigarette-smoking doctor in a painting printed within the liner notes.
ALTHOUGH NOT FOR THE EASILY OFFENDED, or faint of heart, Bill Hicks was arguably the best, and without doubt, the funniest social commentator of the 1980s. In a decade when cable television, and a comedy club on nearly every suburban street corner brought stand-up comedy to its commercial peak, Hicks strode fearlessly in the footsteps of Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, and his "Outlaw Comic" friend Sam Kinison. He crossed the country, spewing thoughtful, often caustic, and always hilarious opinions into the face of anyone fortunate enough to see him. While other notable stand-ups of the time (Jerry Seinfeld, Jay Leno, Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, and Richard Belzer) moved on to make their lucrative marks on television and in the movies, Hicks, until his death in 1994, with no concern of damaging his maketabiltiy, remained relentless in his committed, sometimes pornographic attack on American society. Considering much of Bill's best material was founded on politics and religion, and what he described as "the crudest joke I ever told" was a bathtub description featuring Rush Limbaugh, Ronald Reagan, and a squatting Barbara Bush, it's unfortunate that today we can only imagine what Bill's take would have been on our Jesus-loving leader today. No doubt it would have elicited a chuckle or two.
