THE FLIGHT OF DISCOVERY, the first Shuttle launched after 2003, when Columbia incinerated as it re-entered the Earth's atmosphere.
Listen for the young grandmother's excitement as she and her family watch the launch of Discovery from the usually quiet bank of the Indian River. The family had recently purchased its small, traditional 1880s Florida home on what's called the River Road, a scenic drive that runs along the Intracoastal Waterway through Cocoa and Rockledge, 10 miles west of from Cape Canaveral.

Great fun, when they're not shooting at you.
For the past six years, in early May, the beach in Fort Lauderdale has hosted one of the world's largest airshows. Starting Wednesday, a diverse collection of flying machines begin to fill the South Florida sky, and continue through Thursday and Friday, as more arrive, or participate in a continuous series of practice sessions. The organized show is then put on both Saturday and Sunday. Here you see the opening of the 2006 Saturday show — a pair of Navy F-18s demonstrating air-to-ground attack maneuvers.
Alternating year-to-year, either the Air Force Thunderbirds, or the Navy Blue Angels headline the event.

FLAHERTY FAMILY REUNION ...
(July 4th Weekend 2005)
At the time, Kathy and I were waiting for a flight at Hartford's Bradley International Airport, when we noticed a woman and her four children waiting for who we assumed was her husband. Minutes later, a group of soldiers, returning from Iraq, emerged from the tunnel off their plane. The euphoric shriek of one of the soldier's daughters confirmed our thought. We, like most others in the terminal were swept up in the emotional moment, and documented the reunion. Unfortunately, we were without the family's name as the reunited group left the area to a round of spontaneous applause.
After two years of being posted on YouTube, Jim Flaherty called (last week, October 2007) to say that a fellow Navy surgeon had seen the clip, and that I was trying to identify him. Turns out that in the meantime, Jim had returned to Iraq for another four-month deployment, and that he and his family had another such reunion last year.
Regardless of our feelings about the United States' misguided involvement in the Middle East (and for those who "led" us into it), we should never lose sight, or appreciation, for the disciplined and loyal soldiers who surrender their personal liberty, and faithfully follow their superiors' orders (no matter how inane).
... and remember, "SUPPORT" (as in "SUPPORT OUR TROOPS") is more than wearing a Flag Pin on your lapel, or sticking a Yellow Ribbon on the back of your Hummer!
