Understated and hidden away but from the very first moment you walk in the main room, you are gripped by a club that had presence and awe and helped to define LeedsImmediately the clubs infamous lasers, visuals and strobes capture huge crowds in the darkness. The main room with its warehouse high ceilings, minimal bare brick interior is without doubt the most dramatic club space in Leeds.
Massive acts like Booka Shade, M.A.N.D.Y, Scratch Perverts, Ritchie Hawtin, Adam Freeland, LFO, Pendulum, Mylo, Black Strobe, Dave Clarke and others have all rammed this room.
The special make up of this club is that along side this main room the club has off-shoots, corridors, twisting old staircases and an outdoor terrace. There are a few old features amongest the modern urban finish that reminds you it used to be a Victorian School. Very very wrong!!
Just off the main room is The Beats Bar with an intimate vibe and a great DJ-Crowd connection. Compared to the main room this area makes you feel like you are in a totally different club, with flat bed style seating and cosy corners. Clubbers have the option to either chill out or get up and dance.
The back door off the Beats Bar leads to a very cool place. Down a flight of stairs you are taken to a terrace space. The tree planted terrace is situated smack bang in the centre of the club making you totally surrounded by huge walls and wicked architecture. In the underlit space, crowds gather to smoke, meet, chat and cool off.
From here there is another treat. Through a narrow corridor you are taken in to a basement room holding 500 people. Again this room is totally different. Low ceilings, dark corners and minimal lighting gives this a proper underground den feel. This room has a feeling that everyone is together as one and on a trip with the dj. The large sound system is perfect with its earthy bassy sound. The polished wood bar and crystal chandeliers add a bit of dirty posh to the mix. This room is also the home of VeryVeryVeryWrongIndeed and its random madness and great tunes.
This package of different rooms, corridors, staircases, meeting areas gives the Northern Light in Leeds a unique position in clubland in the North of ther UK. With it often filling its 1450 capacity the club is always vibrant and full of cool people. Ultimately the biggest recommendation given to the club is from clubbers who travel here from a far. As all classic underground clubs the emphasis is based on music working in spaces for todays clubber.
