This up and coming artist was originally born in Eritrea located in East Africa on November 4, 1984. Because of feuding countries Nef’s family decided to move to the states to find a better life for the children. Surrounded with her two brothers Solomon and Daniel and one sister Segen, Nef grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Growing up in a culture unfamiliar to her parents Nef had to evolve learning and experiencing faces of the world on first hand experiences. Her parents had not grown up in this society so many challenges arose in her childhood that she had to surpass herself. In primary school and high school Nef was a very intelligent student, who strived for the best and showed it through her grades. Nef also had a passion for working and being independent. She carried part time employment from the age of 13, paying her own bills and helping her family when needed.
In the Fall of 2002 she started her first year at Michigan State University excited and motivated to be away from her norm. Though her major was undecided at that point she tried different classes to see what interested her the most. Eventually she decided to take Criminal Justice as her major, more interested in the law side of the field. During this time she did incur a Felony due to a course of events in her third year of college. Due to the felony it was time to change majors once again because of the conflict of interest. She picked up the minor in psychology because it was a field she felt she had grown into personally. After realizing that the course of events had elongated her future studies she decided to dabble into her musical insight. She knew that without the passion, she had to change her career goals. While in college and throughout her life music had been a release. She spent many times listening to artists such as Lauryn Hill, Notorious BIG, Tupac, LOX, JayZ and Nas to name a few.
Nef started going to studios with friends and writing on her spare time. In late 2006 in a late studio session with friends she decided to show them what she had been working on. They were blown away with her musical talent and lyrical abilities as an emcee. Soon she had realized that after praying and asking God what her purpose was He had showed her. From those early stages or her career she was motivated to build her career from the ground up. Because she knew that the music business was heading towards Independent Artist and Independent Labels, she decided to brand herself with her won label. Though Nef did not graduate from college she took all of the past experiences and knowledge gained and put them into her career. In 2007 Nef started her Independently owned Record Label called BORN REBEL Entertainment. She spent the first few months of the year getting herself used to studio equipment and the local producers in her area. In early 2007 Nef collaborated with Taichi, local artist from Grand Rapids who had developed a reputation for himself and his label Wealthy Family Records, with the hit " Let Me Show U", produced by legendary producer Izzy Dope. This collaboration proved to many that Nef also could hold her own when featured with other artist. At this time she also dropped her first mixtape, Diamond In The Rough, a composition of industry beats laced with her lyrical presence. It showcased her ability to ride the beat and gave fans an inner look into her personal life, as well as conscious state of mind. In May of 2007 she got her first gig at the Grand Rapids Hip Hop Awards in hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Though many had not even known that Nef was an emcee she took the crowd by storm. That moment created the foundation to her reputation as a phenomenal lyricist. For the months to carry on she continued to do shows in neighboring cities such as Muskegon, Lansing, Detroit, Jackson, and Flint, as well as promote events for various clubs.
In March 2008 she signed with Kings Road Management to help build the foundation of her label as well as herself as an artist. She is currently working on her first album, and the future. Stay tuned ! More Music Coming Soon !!!!!!
