I don't define myself solely by what I do or what I have achieved. There is more to me than what I've accomplished. I love my life and I love what I do. Each day more of what I do reflects what I actually love to do...
MARIPOSA is an award winning Nuyorican poet from the Bronx. A poet, writer, educator, playwright, actress, visual artist and human rights activist, Mariposa has performed at colleges and universities throughout the United States; major NYC venues such as the Nuyorican Poets Café and the Joseph Papp Public Theater, as well as El Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña and the Nuyorican Café in San Juan, Puerto Rico; The United Nation’s World Conference Against Racism in Durban, South Africa; and the 2001 Essence Music Fest in New Orleans where she, in the words of Essence Magazine’s Susan Taylor, “mesmerized an audience of 5,000.” In March 2002, Mariposa performed in Eve Ensler’s Vagina Monologues for V-Day Harlem at the Apollo Theater, co-produced by Rosie Perez and Lisa Gaye Hamilton which also featured Lynn Whitfield, Selma Hayek, Lauren Velez, Mary Alice, Rosario Dawson, Sweet Honey in the Rock, Eve, Amel Larrieux and other legendary women.
Mariposa’s poetry has been featured on the critically acclaimed HBO documentary “Americanos: Latino Life in the US," produced by Edward James Olmos and Time Warner. Other film credits include “Dream Makers” produced by Banco Popular and the Lifetime TV Documentary “V Day: Until the Violence Stops,” produced by Eve Ensler.
Mariposa is the author of the poemario Born Bronxeña: Poems on Identity, Love & Survival and has published articles and poetry in the Centro Journal, The Hostos Review, Urban Latino Magazine, New York Newsday, El Nuevo Dia, Siempre, Hunt’s Point Alive!, The Vieques Times, NYU’s Brownstone Magazine and Concienica Magazine, AHA! Hispanic Arts News, Resistance in Paradise: 100 Years of U.S. Colonialism, Drum Voices Volume 23, What’s Up Magazine and Def Poetry Jam’s Bumrush the Page. Mariposa has also written and performed in her own one woman show.
She received a Bachelor’s degree in Women’s Studies and a Masters degree in Teaching & Learning from New York University. As a teaching artist and writer-in-residence at The Caribbean Cultural Center, Poets & Writers, Poets House, The Bronx Writers Center, Teachers & Writers Collaborative and the New Jersey Young Artists in Development Program, Mariposa has taught poetry workshops at elementary schools, middle schools and high school schools; The New York Public Library, The Brooklyn Public Library, senior citizen centers and non-profit organizations. Mariposa has organized several student poetry recitals and has edited numerous anthologies of her students’ work.
In 1999 Mariposa was awarded The Van Lier Literary Fellowship by The Bronx Council on the Arts. In 1997 Mariposa received “Lo Mejor de Nuestra Comunidad” (The Best of Our Community) Award by El Comité Noviembre (NYC's Puerto Rican Heritage Month Committee)for her poem Ode to the Diasporican in which she declares “No nací en Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico nacío en mi.” (“I was not born in Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico was born in me.”)
Mariposa has co-produced, with her twin sister poet & artist melleSOL, several spoken word/open mic/poetry series in Manhattan and The Bronx such as “Sol in the Heights,” “Sol in El Barrio” and “BX Bohemia.”
Mariposa is dedicated to using her time and her art to making a positive difference in her community and the lives of young people, the eradication of racism, social injustice and violence against women, the realization of world peace, the preservation of humanity and the cultivation of never-ending hope for a bright future.
