Poeta Guerrera (Poet Warrior) is a Puerto Rican spoken word artist from Newark, NJ and Moca, PR. Her first passion is writing, but this artist is a Jane of all trades – performing, acting, modeling, painting, playing congas and djembes as well as dancing are just some of her passions. Poeta’s poetry ranges in style and depth. At moments it rages in political fire – angry at the injustices that plague the world. Other pieces are deep and personal – commenting on a painful childhood that has fueled her love for artistic expression. Having always searched for a deeper meaning and understanding to life, Poeta’s personal experiences in different religions has impacted her work and has left imprints in her daily life. Not afraid to be different or to be true to herself, Poeta’s poetry captures her journey through life’s difficult emotions. Poeta Guerrera has self-published two poetry books – Ramas y Raices (Branches & Roots) and ReConstruct. Both books can be purchased online at http://stores.lulu.com/poetaguerrera . She has made a demo spoken word album entitled Mi Diario (My Diary), which can be purchased by contacting Poeta at [email protected] . Currently, Poeta Guerrera is working on a two-volume project entitled The 28th of July Movement due to be out by Fall 2008, which will be a book (volume 1) and a spoken word CD (volume 2).
Poeta Guerrera has been honored to perform on many stages, some of which include: Columbia University, Carlito's Cafe, Capicu @ Area 51, No Intros @ Nuves, Cemi Underground, Women In Islam - Betty Shabazz Tribute, Semi-Finalist at the Parle 2007 Poetry Slam, AIDS Crisis in Puerto Rico: A fundraiser, Artistas Dándole Cara al SIDA, Yonkers, NY, Capicu @ Notice Lounge, 123 Community Space, Langston Hughes House, La Bodega de la Familia's Annual Block Party, Bowery Poetry Club, Nuyorican Poet's Café, Skipper’s Tavern, Union Square, Border’s Bookstore, WOW Cafe Theater, and many more.
