As we are a nonprofit organization it has been difficult to find adequate funding to keep our programs afloat. Currently, an alarming number of arts and cultural organizations are being shut down due to lack of funding. Tribes has itself, fallen on hard times. We are currently struggling to maintain good financial standing while keeping Tribes programs in tact. Tribes programs are a very important part of the lives of the residents and artists in our community. Please consider making a contribution to the arts this Holliday Season. All donations are tax deductible. Checks can be made out to A Gathering of the Tribes and mailed to Po. box 20693 Tompkins Square Station New York NY 1009. We thank you for your generous support. From everyone at Tribes, enjoy the New Year.Steve Cannon- A Gathering of the TribesLet’s Rock

Let’s Rock,
Is the dog chasing the car? Or is the car running away?
What propels our mores, actions and values, and within which contexts do the rational behind our codes begin to become distorted?
‘Let’s Rock’ is the third in a series of Solo exhibitions which aim to deconstruct our understanding of familiar icons, within a conceptual realm. Previous exhibitions within this series include “I Coincide With You In the Other†– HVCCA-Peekskill NY 2006, and “I Can’t Even Hear Youâ€- Agenzia04 Gallery – Bologna Italy 2007. Itziar Barrio approaches the icon as a prototypical figure by maneuvering repeating characters and symbols through various abstract ‘worlds’. She creates these worlds utilizing Video, Animation, original drawings which have been digitally processed, and mixed media installation.hort Fiction Contest

New Works by Richard Ziello
Curated by Steve Cannon
Richard Ziello is a meticulous builder who’s large scale, wood constructions define ten years of his career. These pieces are playful and formal, combining studied structure with peculiar subject matter. The transformation of wood into what at first glace appear to be found objects and materials, invokes a stoic presence, creating subliminal inferences. The viewer sees a seemingly familiar object. The reference is difficult to define. Yes, these items resemble their utilitarian counterparts, yet they remain still, transient, like relics in an attic of the subconscious.
Five years ago Ziello returned to what was perhaps his original medium for artistic expression- “toysâ€. By fabricating visual elements, which act to frame self- portraits, he radically alters toys, utilizing their mechanical and musical components, to create larger kinetic structures. The combination of these womanly forms, conjure unsettling connections and mischievous satire. Art with a wink.
Rebirth is perhaps a return to the free-spirited and playful nature of artistic expression, perhaps a larger statement about self-identity, versus the broader contextual nature of the art.
Ziello is a thoughtful and cerebral artist. The mischievous nature of his work echoes that of Calder’s wire and circus series, while his attention to detail recalls Tom freedman. A strict loyalty to craftsmanship has always guided Mr. Ziello’s work. This recent series is not a departure, but an evolution of material and contextual diversion. His latest constructions combine the reconstruction and editing of trash, kitsch and pop items, creating a discourse between commercial and formalist structures; a knowingly disconcerting statement of purpose.
