About Me

It has been an eventful and thus far, successful year. Attendance has been strong and we would like to thank everyone who participated as audience members and as performers for showing support for Tribes and art in general. This past year, Tribes gallery launched eleven visual art exhibitions, including the showcasing of the winners of Tribes’ art contest curated by Robert Storr. We would like to extend our thanks to all those, and there were many, who turned out for the openings, and hope to see you and your friends next year.Fly by night press published two books of poetry by very promising individual en=merging authors; Black Ice by Barbara Purcell and Remain by Jennifer Murphy. We are proud to announce, “Remain” recently received the Pen America Book award out of C.A.Tribes magazine celebrated the publication of its eleventh issue featuring an in depth interview with Mc Carter fellow Regina Carter. This august Tribes celebrated its 13th annual Charlie Parker Festival, “Bird Flew’, featuring a visual arts exhibition, showcasing fifteen emerging, local and international artist, two poetry readings starring five established and emerging poets held in Tribes Gallery and garden spaces, and a series of free concerts featuring local jazz musicians and music from world cultures. This year we were also proud to feature the Billy Bang Quartet as well as Butch Morris’ Chorus of poets as part of our festival schedule. In the spirit of joyful creation, the Charlie parker Festival ended with a free block party featuring the Hungry March Band, and a costume party for all ages with dancing in the streets. Ryan Nena, the local clinic, provided space for a one hour long open mic and free AIDS drive. All events remain free and open to the public, suitable for people of all ages.Tribes reading and concert series held strong this year as well, featuring one reading every week by emerging and established writers reading from their own works, and at least one concert a month featuring local musicians.Once again, we would like to extend our deepest thanks to all those who supported to Tribes this past year.As you may know, arts funding is being dramatically cut. As we are a nonprofit organization it has been difficult to find adequate funding to keep our programs afloat. Currently, an alarming number of arts and cultural organizations are being shut down due to lack of funding. Tribes has itself, fallen on hard times. We are currently struggling to maintain good financial standing while keeping Tribes programs in tact. Tribes programs are a very important part of the lives of the residents and artists in our community. Please consider making a contribution to the arts this Holliday Season. All donations are tax deductible. Checks can be made out to A Gathering of the Tribes and mailed to Po. box 20693 Tompkins Square Station New York NY 1009. We thank you for your generous support. From everyone at Tribes, enjoy the New Year.Steve Cannon- A Gathering of the TribesLet’s Rock Itziar BarrioMay 31st 6-pm Opening Reception Tribes Gallery – 212-674-3778 285 East 3rd St. B/W Ave C&D 2ND Fl www.tribes.org [email protected] Multimedia- Video-Animation- Installation Contemporary Basque Artist www.itziarbarrio.com Let’s Rock, Is the dog chasing the car? Or is the car running away? What propels our mores, actions and values, and within which contexts do the rational behind our codes begin to become distorted? ‘Let’s Rock’ is the third in a series of Solo exhibitions which aim to deconstruct our understanding of familiar icons, within a conceptual realm. Previous exhibitions within this series include “I Coincide With You In the Other” – HVCCA-Peekskill NY 2006, and “I Can’t Even Hear You”- Agenzia04 Gallery – Bologna Italy 2007. Itziar Barrio approaches the icon as a prototypical figure by maneuvering repeating characters and symbols through various abstract ‘worlds’. She creates these worlds utilizing Video, Animation, original drawings which have been digitally processed, and mixed media installation.hort Fiction Contest short fiction contestIf you are intersted..... and have some writing to put out there:Tribes short Fiction Contest. - Deadline September 15th 20071st place winner receives $500 and publication in Tribes Magazine- Journal2nd place winner receives $200 and publication on tribes web magazine.3rd place winner receives $100 and publication on Tribes web magazine. Please mail all entries to: Tribes Att: Short Fiction Contest P.O. New Works by Richard Ziello
Curated by Steve Cannon
Richard Ziello is a meticulous builder who’s large scale, wood constructions define ten years of his career. These pieces are playful and formal, combining studied structure with peculiar subject matter. The transformation of wood into what at first glace appear to be found objects and materials, invokes a stoic presence, creating subliminal inferences. The viewer sees a seemingly familiar object. The reference is difficult to define. Yes, these items resemble their utilitarian counterparts, yet they remain still, transient, like relics in an attic of the subconscious.
Five years ago Ziello returned to what was perhaps his original medium for artistic expression- “toys”. By fabricating visual elements, which act to frame self- portraits, he radically alters toys, utilizing their mechanical and musical components, to create larger kinetic structures. The combination of these womanly forms, conjure unsettling connections and mischievous satire. Art with a wink.
Rebirth is perhaps a return to the free-spirited and playful nature of artistic expression, perhaps a larger statement about self-identity, versus the broader contextual nature of the art.
Ziello is a thoughtful and cerebral artist. The mischievous nature of his work echoes that of Calder’s wire and circus series, while his attention to detail recalls Tom freedman. A strict loyalty to craftsmanship has always guided Mr. Ziello’s work. This recent series is not a departure, but an evolution of material and contextual diversion. His latest constructions combine the reconstruction and editing of trash, kitsch and pop items, creating a discourse between commercial and formalist structures; a knowingly disconcerting statement of purpose.

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

A diverse group of lovers of art, music, poetry and fiction. Anyone with an open mind, and the need to see art - great art! Hopefully we'll meet you at art openings, which are a great place to mingle with up-and-coming contemporary artists from around New York City, and the world. We are located on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, and if you want to drop by, we're always up for a discussion in our galery. So come on over to 3rd Street between Avenue C and Avenue D, building number 285.
