Alida Valli (Pola, Istria, 31 maggio 1921 - Roma, 22 aprile 2006), nome d'arte di Alida Maria von Altenburger, baronessa von Markenstein und Freuenberg, Ã¨ stata un'attrice italiana.Nasce a Pola da madre istriana e da padre trentino, un professore di filosofia con ascendenze aristocratiche. Frequenta i corsi del Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia ed esordisce giovanissima sul grande schermo.Ben presto interpreta ruoli da protagonista e diventa presto l'attrice simbolo del cosiddetto "cinema dei telefoni bianchi", lavorando in film come Manon Lescaut (1940) e Ore 9 lezione di chimica (1941). La sua versatilitÃ la impone anche in ruoli drammatici quale quello di Luisa in Piccolo mondo antico di Mario Soldati (1941) che al Festival di Venezia le vale un premio speciale concesso dal conte Giuseppe Volpi di Misurata come miglior attrice italiana dell'anno.Nel 1942 perÃ² il suo film Noi vivi - Addio Kira subisce, su pressione della Germania, la censura fascista.A differenza di molti suoi colleghi, nell'autunno del 1943 la Valli, per evitare di recitare in film di propaganda fascista, rifiuta di trasferirsi negli studi cinematografici del fascismo repubblichino e rimane a Roma. L'anno successivo sposa l'artista e compositore Oscar De Mejo e nel gennaio 1945 nasce il suo primogenito Carlo.Nel 1947 la sua interpretazione di Eugenia Grandet nel film omonimo di Maro Soldati le frutta un Nastro d'Argento come miglior attrice. Nello stesso anno si trasferisce a Hollywood su invito del produttore Selznick che vorrebbe farne la "Ingrid Bergman italiana". Appartengono a questo periodo tra gli altri Il caso Paradine di Alfred Hitchcock, in cui la Valli recita accanto a Gregory Peck e Il terzo uomo (1949) di Carol Reed con Orson Welles.Nel 1951 torna in Italia e pochi anni dopo fornisce una delle sue migliori interpretazioni nel capolavoro di Luchino Visconti, Senso (1954). Nello stesso anno il suo nome viene associato al cosiddetto caso Montesi in quanto amica di Piero Piccioni, il principale indiziato dell'epoca poi pienamente scagionato. Decide cosÃ¬ di allontanarsi dalle scene e torna davanti alla macchina da presa solo nel 1957 diretta da Michelangelo Antonioni in Il grido.La sua fama si consolida sotto la direzione di registri quali Gillo Pontecorvo (La grande strada azzurra del 1957), Franco Brusati (Il disordine del 1962), Pier Paolo Pasolini (Edipo re del 1967).Negli anni Settanta si dimostra un'attrice molto versatile, lavorando con Valerio Zurlini ne La prima notte di quiete (1972) accanto ad Alain Delon, Mario Bava ne La casa dell'esorcismo (1975), Bernardo Bertolucci in La strategia del ragno (1970) e nel kolossal Novecento (1976), Dario Argento, che le affida due ruoli inquietanti, in Suspiria (1977) e Inferno (1980). Il suo ultimo film Ã¨ La sconosciuta (2006) di Giuseppe Tornatore.Riceve il David di Donatello alla carriera nel 1991 (ne aveva giÃ vinto uno nel 1982 come miglior attrice non protagonista per La caduta degli angeli ribelli) e il Leone d'Oro alla carriera al festival di Venezia nel 1997. *********************************************************** Alida Valli (31 May 1921 â€“ 22 April 2006), sometimes simply credited as Valli, was an Italian actress.Alida Valli was born in Pola, Istria, Italy [during its short reign] (now called Pula, Croatia), of Austrian and Italian extraction on her father's side, Slovenian and Istrian on her mother's side, and she was christened Alida Maria Laura von Altenburger, Baroness of Marckenstein and Freuenberg.At 15 years old she went to Rome, where she attended a School for Movie Actors and Directors. Beautiful, elegant and talented (with a sensual and melancholic glance), Alida Valli started her movie career in 1934, in "Il Capello Tre Punte"(The Three Cornered Hat). After many roles in a large number of comedies, she could proved her dramatic talent in Piccolo mondo antico (1941), directed by Mario Soldati. During the War Years she starred in many movies, like Stasera niente di nuovo (1942) and Noi Vivi - Addio Kira! (1943), and became a movie star.Alida Valli owed her career in English language films to David Selznick, who signed her to a contract, thinking that he had found a second Ingrid Bergman. In Hollywood she played in many great movies: she was the murder suspect Maddalena Paradine in Alfred Hitchcock's The Paradine Case (1947), and the mysterious Czech refugee wanted by the Russians in post-war Vienna in Carol Reed's The Third Man (1949). But her foreign experience wasn't a great success.In the early 1950s she came back to Europe, and starred in many french and italian movies. In 1954 she had a great success in the melodramatic Senso, directed by Luchino Visconti. In that movie, set in mid-1800s Venice during the Risorgimento, she was a Venetian countess torn between nationalistic feelings and an adulterous love for an officer (played by Farley Granger) of the occupying Austrian forces. Her performance was vivid and passionate.In 1959, she appeared in Georges Franju's horror masterpiece Les Yeux sans visage (Eyes Without a Face).Since the 1960s she worked in several pictures with great directors, like Pier Paolo Pasolini (Edipo re, 1967), Bernardo Bertolucci (La strategia del ragno, 1972; Novecento, 1976) and Dario Argento (Suspiria, 1977). Her last movie appearance was in Semana Santa (2002), with Mira Sorvino. She also appeared on the stage in Italy.She died on 22 April 2006 in Rome, slightly over a month short of her 85th birthday. She was survived by her two sons by Oscar de Mejo, Carlo and Larry (and five grandchildren).
