Chico Art Center is a nonprofit organization established in 1955 to create and support art education programs in the community as well as to promote,
enhance and sustain the visual arts.
Chico, California was ranked #10 in the “100 Best Art Towns in America” by author John Villani (4th edition). Villani said Chico ranked highly because "the community is supportive, accessible and art oriented." He was impressed by the diversity, availability of affordable studio space, and the extensive on-campus art galleries. Villani said the fact that there is art on the walls in most of the Chico businesses shows that the community is supportive and "takes a great deal of pride." Chico was also the only
town in California to make the top 10.

Art Instruction
Four times per year a full schedule of art classes is offered. Classes are four to eight weeks in length and geared toward specific age groups or experience levels. The Center also offers special workshops, lectures, and demonstrations by guest artists.
Gallery and Gift Shop
The gallery serves our community by offering a wide variety of art exhibits, docent tours, and gallery internship programs. Members are invited to submit work to be sold in the gallery gift shop. Included in the shop are: paintings, jewelry, published books, ceramics, glass, mixed media, fiber art and photography.
Call For Artists
The Center boasts an 800-square-foot gallery space with professional lighting. It is a very desirable place to exhibit work and the annual call for artists elicits proposals from a wide range of regional artists. Group shows, as well as solo exhibitions, representing all media are presented throughout the year.
COBA
The Chico Open Board Art (COBA) is a unique outdoor public art project. Twenty artists are paid to paint original images, which are displayed in downtown Chico during the summer months. In the fall, the public is invited to choose their favorites at several voting events. The two artists whose works receive the most votes then paint a permanent mural in the downtown area. All of the original images are then auctioned to help fund the project for the following year.
Open Studios Tour
A self-guided tour through local artists' studios, this delightful adventure gives curious art lovers the opportunity to watch the artists at work. Works on display and for sale include all mediums: painting, sculpture, glass, clay, jewelry, photography, prints, and more.
Members Exhibit
Chico is home to many talented artists, many of whom support the arts through their membership in the Chico Art Center. All member artists have the opportunity each year to display their work in the gallery during the annual Member's Show. This event showcases the interesting and diverse talents of our members.
Chico Discovery Series
This gallery series is designed to encourage local artists in the exploration and development of their respective mediums. Through exhibitions at the Center, the diversity of talent that surrounds us is highlighted and recognized.
Empire Coffee Car
The Art Center purchased the 1947 Pullman Standard Coach to transform it into a gift shop and coffee bar with a special focus on local rail history. The project was inspired by the need to have an additional funding stream to help support the numerous community projects in which the Center is involved. It should provide a unique environment to enhance a visit to the gallery, when taking classes, or just when waiting for the bus or train to arrive.
Helping Out
The Chico Art Center is always looking for volunteers to welcome visitors and answer questons at our reception desk during our gallery hours from Noon to 4:00 PM, Wednesday through Sunday. If you are interested in helping out, please contact the Chico Art Center at (530) 895-8726.
