Andrew Winton - Lap slide guitar specialist

About Me

Andrew is an independent solo artist combining acoustic guitar, lap slide, dobro and seven-string lap guitar/bass (the Wintonbeast), with hollers and stomps to provide an engaging and authentic performance. Andrew’s sound has been likened to a cross between Ben Harper, Sting, Kelly-Joe Phelps and Harry Manx. His performances are driven by infectious rhythms, stunning slide, bluesy vocals, quirky lyrics and storytelling. 2006 saw Andrew tour Australia for three months, play at numerous festivals, events and radio broadcasts, and take out first place in the Folk/Acoustic category of the Australian Songwriter’s Association awards (as well as the award for best live performance at the awards night!). Andrew was a feature artist on ABC Radio National’s Music Deli program, and placed in the top 10 in the instrumental category of the MusicOz awards. In 2007 Andrew was nominated for a West Australian Music Industry (WAMI) award for best blues/roots artist, and spent 6 weeks touring the US & Canada having been invited to perform at the prestigious SxSW Music Festival in Austin, Texas and also Canadian Music Week in Toronto. In 2007 Andrew made memorable appearances at most key Australian festivals including Woodford Folk Festival, West Coast Blues & Roots, Blues on Broadbeach (QLD) and many others, along with numerous other shows around Australia. 2008 has already proved successful with a recent WAMI nomination for Best Guitarist, and a finalist spot in the International Songwriting Competition. His third album ‘The Decompression Chamber’ (2006) continues to receive critical acclaim (including a recent glowing review in US publication Vintage Guitar Magazine), and he is currently writing material for his next album to be recorded in 2008.

Check out the website for all kinds of stuff about Andrew’s playing history, photos, upcoming gigs, reviews, song samples, lyrics, press downloads, email contact and all that sort of thing. "The first thing you should know about WA-based Andrew Winton is that he’s a seriously good guitarist...in company with some of Australia’s finest singer-songwriters, most notably Jeff Lang, Winton uses a blues base for many of his creations, slipping into jazz mode, and even gospel here and there...Winton’s originals have a quirky quality..." (Tony Hillier, Rhythms Magazine, April 2006)"I’m sitting here on a Sunday morning simply overwhelmed by The Decompression Chamber! It is immediately one of my favourite albums of 2006 and I’m only up to track 3! Lyrically strong and melodically rich, Andrew’s playing is superb, the arrangements are stunning, the production outstanding. What more can anyone want? This is an album to listen to lat at night, early in the morning, whilst driving. It is an album to listen and love." (John Carver, Presenter, PBSfm Melbourne)"Winton demonstrated his diversity at the CD launch...His set included an edgy Ben Harper-style funk in A Perfect Time, a dark, rambling blues style in Let You In, and a sweeter pop tune, Too Hard Again, which has been picked up by radio stations around the country. Winton’s display of musical expertise, combined with his talent for storytelling, kept the audience rapt....Guitar solos were melodically well-spaced and always rhythmically interesting. Winton’s lyrics (poetry is probably a more accurate term) are profound, with a salty, dryly humourous edge." (The West Australian, June 23, 2006)
