Cantona

pop is the new punk rock!

About Me

Take an expatriate English guitarist with an unashamed pop sensibility, add an exceptional lyricist with a voice that will stop you in your tracks. Build their songs on the kind of tempered rhythm section you only find in America, and you have Cantona; a maddeningly-coherent mix of Pop (classic, power, Brit, and indie flavours), Madchester and guitar driven psychedelia. Expect to hear influences, but this is no tribute band!
Named after French footballing legend Eric Cantona, the band has been building a following in Seattle and beyond through its exciting live act and melodically-original pop songwriting.
Spring 2008 sees the release of Cantona's debut full-length "Hello Boy Friend, Coming My Way?" on New York-based Sizzleteen Records. A collection of excellent pop songs drawn from its huge live repetoire, it's bound to make more friends. In April and May of 2007 the band played a series of very positively received dates in the UK ahead of the release, including a headlining slot at Rough Trade's famous RoTA show at the Notting Hill Arts Club.

How to add whilst taking away...

I've been making good progress on a new track in the last week. I wrote the song a few weeks ago (5-6?) and for a long time it was called "Psychedelic Song" because the verse has a driving kind of psy...

Say 'Hello' to Duke Skellington and 'Goodbye' to Trouble Monkey

I would say 'at long last', but actually the arrival of our new single 'Duke Skellington' is pretty snappy. To those of you who have been reading this recording blog (a few of you), it'll be no surpri...

All This Scratching is Making Me Itch

So yesterday and Saturday I finished the tracking of all the non-vocal parts for the new song ("Trouble Monkey" in my head, but to be titled :-)). I did the tremelo guitars, tracked a bass line (that ...

Intentional Loopiness

Work on the new record is going well, in fact we're thinking of releasing something earlier than planned, but more on that later. There's a lot of hit and miss about how we're working, but that's part...

Details for Geeks...

So the tracking went well on Sunday. We managed to get good takes of two tracks out of four planned: "She's Gone Off Again" and "Jitters". We also worked out some cool ways of doing things i...

Down time

This is the time of year that's hardest to deal with for many bands: shows are scarce and holidays make it difficult to keep up momentum. In a way bands are like sharks, they have to keep moving to su...
