ADD BIG BROTHERCLICK THE PICTURE TO ADD BIG BROTHERDarma are about to release their long awaited follow up to last years self funded My Girl e.p. The band are currently putting finishing touches to the album (called "Big brother" after the song that is currently winning many fans on the bands myspace page) I caught up with the two founding members, Jamie Terrett-Bass, and Darren Evans-Singer/guitarist, in between recording and er, well, playing football, to discuss what the future holds for them.Do you have any specific targets for your band?Darren-I’ve achieved all mine, I wanted to play the stage at Cyfarthfa park! That’s sorted, that’s done. Play the barfly was a pretty big target too. Jamie-I went to see Janus Stark when I was 14 in the barfly and I thought, ah man this is so cool, so I thought I will definitely be playing here one day. We want to get out of Wales really. South Wales is really good for music now, but I think for the music scene if you wanna get around Britain you gotta get into London. D-It would be nice if the next stage after finishing the album to play out of Wales.Do you take anything from other genres of music?D-It’s quite annoying for me. When you’re in a band and you say you do every type of music, every band says it, so it doesn’t get paid any attention to. Then you hear them live or a record they’ve done and it’s all the same. But when you come and see us-people were saying it at the barfly last night. “every song is different,†I take from every type of music. No one’s heard it yet but there’s songs I’ve written that have orchestral scores. The stuff we’re doing at the moment are the most accessible sing along songs to kind of get people in to us J-Most of the stuff I listen to is punk, metal and grunge-stuff like that, but as soon as we started playing I just realised how much indie and brit pop I’d listened to.How did you come up with the name Darma?D-Our mate came up to us the other day and he’s got like, an encyclopaedia on his phone, and he says “is this what you’re named after?†I said no, it’s just an anagram of some of the letters of our names. So he says “look what it means†and there was this great quote which we’re thinking of using for the album name-The way of the higher truths! J-Darma is what a Buddhist lives by, like we have the ten commandments, they have Darma’s only it’s spelt Dharma. How does the writing of the songs come together?D-As far as lrics are concerned, what normally happens is I’ll get one line. Like the first line in big brother is “Chips in cars†relating to a story tha day in the news where the government wanted every car to have micro chips in them so they knew every time we pulled up on double yellows, or every move you make basically. And I just follow that thread then. With the music, I rip it off! Not blatantly, but if I’m listening to music that I like I’ll try and write something that sounds a bit like it. It always turns out different because Jim and Tim put their stamp on it.In one song, Big brother, there’s a drum solo. How did that come about?D-Jamie missed a couple of weeks of practice, and it was just me and Jim up there. So I played him this song I had, and he came up with these drums that are tribal sounding and it sounded that good that I decided to build the song around it really. I thought what would be great it was a short song about one and a half minutes with the lyrics, and I didn’t want to write any more coz I’d said what I wanted to say. So I just said to Jim we’ll have drum solo here-run with it. Be creative. And he does, for like six minutes every gig!
