About Me

My name is Henny, I'm an escaped battery-cage hen. Currently, I live at the Vancouver Humane Society and spend my days fufilling duties as their mascot and chicken advocate. I spend my time wandering the streets of Vancouver, accompanied by VHS staff and volunteers of course. Together we talk to people and hand out leaflets encouraging the public to buy certified organic eggs or better yet, no eggs at all. www.chickenout.ca
Egg-laying or battery hens are imprisoned for life in battery cages. These wire cages are so small that the hens cannot flap their wings and so restricting that the birds' bones become brittle and can snap through lack of exercise.
Each hen has less living space than the area covered by a single sheet of notebook paper. Cages are stacked in tiers 4-9 cages high. Poop and food waste from the higher tiers falls through the wire onto the chickens in the lower ones. www.chickenout.ca
The hens' natural behaviours such as walking, wing-flapping and scratching at the ground are rendered impossible. Out of fustration, the hens will peck each other's feathers out. To prevent this, they are debeaked- part of their sensitive beaks are sliced off using a laser or hot blade- a severe mutilation that can cause prolonged pain.
I will not stop my tireless advocacy until every last battery-cage chicken is free!! Please do me a favour and buy only certified organic eggs if you choose to eat eggs at all. Certified organic eggs have the highest animal welfare standards and come from chickens who aren't kept in cages like I was.
