Open Records is a progressive/techno/minimal music label intended to create a base for Australian music, artists & DJs on the international stage. Founded in the lush tropical paradise of Cairns in 2005- they have expanded to include representatives in the major dance centers of Australia & across the world with artists from Greece, France, Israel & New Zealand to name a few.
The Open Records sound is not categorized by genre-definition- it takes elements from a broad range of electronic styles, including progressive trance, house, techno, electro, tribal & minimal- winding them together with a characteristic deep rhythmic groove, spacious atmospheres, hypnotic bass-grooves & focus on intelligent, cutting-edge musicality & production.
Featuring artists such as Antix, D-Sens, 2kings in Motion, SunControlSpecies/Wombat, Eegor, Embark and Brisker&Magitman, their first compilation Slow-Release was a great success, receiving both strong sales & acclaim from fans, critics & DJs alike. It received play everywhere from some of the world’s biggest festivals & clubs to radio show’s Triple J’s Mixup- firmly establishing them as a strong player in the international progressive dance scene.
2007 has seen Open move into a diverse variety of areas within the music industry, including artist management, club nights & events, track licensing & copyright – all the while keeping their feet firmly planted in the outdoor party & festival culture of Australia.
Working hard to put the finishing touches on their 2nd compilation Festivus, Open Records have been keeping the releases coming with a number of Digital EPs including the debut releases from GMJ/Fulcrum & a Slow-Release remix EP (all exclusive to Beatport.com). Following these there will be some vinyl releases & a double-CD minimal/tech compilation to be released in early ‘08 compiled by Solatek & Paul Abad.
Aside from acts that have collaborated with Open in the past, a number of new artists will be working with Open Records in 2007/2008 including plenty of releases from Greece’s 2kings in Motion (a collaboration between Fog & V-Point born on Slow-Release), Italy’s RPO, Melbourne’s GMJ/Fulcrum, and Cairns’s own Urban Monkeys & Bent Intent.
As well as expanding their roster of artist talent, Open also has some Australia’s finest DJ talent, including Melbourne’s Motive & Gavin Martin, Sydney’s Eegor, Brisbane’s Paul Abad and of course Cairns’s Solatek, Suspekt & Woodsman. Each artist & DJ brings their own sound & talents to the label- enabling us to focus on a wide range of sounds & applications all the while retaining a close connection with a tight label network.
Recently they also put their backing behind a successful club night in Far North Queensland- Deep As Funk Cairns. Deep As Funk Cairns is an expansion of one of Sydney’s best known & loved club nights, Deep As Funk. At the events, Open Records hopes to bring the finest talent from both Australia & Internationally to FNQ in the comfort of Cairns’ premier indoor dance venue, Soho Nightclub & Lounge. So far the events have received massive support from the local community & Open hopes they will continue to become one of the premier underground dance music nights in Australia.
Open Records will continue to strive to bring the very best in electronic dance music to both Australia & the world- their simple philosophy of “music-first†ensures project they embark on is of the highest standard- paving the way for their strong base of talent to leave their mark on the international stage.
