About Me

BLACK AUGUST was established in the California prison system to commemorate the life and legacy of George Jackson, who was assassinated in August 1971.Black August Hip Hop Project supports and politicizes the culture of our generation and uses it to aid in the struggle for human rights. Our goals are to:* Raise awareness for political prisoners and prisoners of war in the US. * Educate Black and Brown people of the legacy of freedom fighters in the struggle for our liberation. * Develop and expand an international network of activists and artists opposed to the criminalization and mass incarceration of Afrikan people. *Implement an international human rights campaign using hip hop as a tool and common language. *Link and address issues facing Afrikan people globally, such as AIDS, poverty, incarceration and police brutality.Some of the artists who have donated their talent to Black August in the past include: The Roots, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Black Thought, Erykah Badu, Boots from the Coup, Common Sense, Les Nubian, Chuck D, dead prez, David Banner, Fat Joe and the Terror Squad, Flo Brown, Imani Azuri, Hedrush, Jaguar Wright, Jeru the Damaja, Kwatta Kamp, Saigon, Goapele, Welfare Poets, Tony Touch, Jean Grae, Boot Camp Click: Black Moon, Smiff-N-Wesson, Immortal Technique, DJ Evil Dee, DJ Scratch and others.

MyGen Profile GeneratorBlack August at MXGM in Oakland: Every Sunday preceding their political education workshop, they will be going on nature hikes. Everyone will be participating in the month long fast. The concert is scheduled to take place around August 16th and the perspective venue is Suites Ballroom in Down Town Oakland. The talent is still being arranged, but they are working with Kamau. Also they are deeply invested in the SF 8 court nearings continuing throughout the month of August.Black August in New Orleans Following the Katrina Commemoration on the 29th there is a concert that evening with Dead Prez as the feature artist. Sess 45 (the youth outreach coordinator for PHRF) and other local talent will also perform. The perspective venue is at the Ashe Cultural Arts Center in New Orleans. .
